Graphic Design Help!!!
Link | by on 2010-02-01 15:18:32
Now I know that there are some VERY talented graphic design artists on this web site!!! I was wondering if you could give me some pointers on the graphic I have posted below.

Info:

This is for an international technology competition hosted in the US. I'll be taking this to the state level competition next month.

The design prompt is "Snapshot of Innovation" and those words must be featured in the design.

Also the TSA logo must be included in the design, and the placement of said element is driving me crazy...

Other than that the only other requirements are that it contains more than three colors.

Well if you have any suggestions I am open to any critical advice.

Rinnie~ You might want to check avy sig club for it

AvyXSig Club

Most of the graphic designers hang around there.

Although, I am not a pro myself I Can offer you some uh.... tips on it. I'd say for you to only ask the help for one person from avyXsig club since each and every person have their own preferences. Mixing them into one graphic will resulted in ermm, chaos.

Thanks for the tip Renma!!! I'll go poke my head in and ask!

When I was in high school, a bunch of us were involved with TSA, too.
Their logo is really horrible to use though, since it's a requirement apparently.
Can you change their logo or just include the name, or even make your own logo?

Not sure what their standards are for graphic design are though.
A friend of mine made a poster one time for it and placed really high, like second or something,
but honestly, it wasn't that good at all, too much basic elements beyond simple.

I'd help with demonstrations and tutorials, but I don't have Photoshop on my Mac right now. Ugh.
You could add more elements to make the light bulb stand out more, some sort of glow effect.
The earth in the light bulb is pretty legit though, did you make that yourself? Pretty sure that's a nice base to have.
The background's too simple, then again you could easily go the simple route, and spice up the simple elements.

I personally have a simplistic-business style, so I'm used to doing stuff like that or the total opposite of extreme brush whoring. XD

Yep I did the earth myself ^^ It's about the only part of this design I'm proud of though!!!

I'm going to take your advice on the glow effect since it's easy to do. As for the over all style, the more business like the better.

As for the back ground it's just your basic comic book style brush on a black background. I was thinking about tying in the background with the light bulb by creating a simple comic book effect (like the one I used in the writer's club icon, only better...)

I'd like to stick to simple, do you have any tips for spicing it up?

Hm... they're making you design something that big? or are you going to scale it down after you finish it? I'm an amatuer GFX artist so I can't give that many tips here, but like DA said, a light source behind the lightbulb. Near the top would look best I think. Other than that, there is a nice flow going on, but I don't know what they're judging by so i don't know if that matters. Basically what I'm getting at is that all attention is directed at the lightbulb which is good. Maybe use smaller text if you can, since that's pretty distracting when in the picture. And since you have to use the logo, is it against the rules to scale it down a little? If you can, then scale it down to a smaller size and place it in the bottom right corner. Althought it might obstruct the legibility of the small font in the blue.

That's all i can really give since I don't know the rules and guidelines, but you've got yourself a pretty legit piece of art right there.

I wish I could show you some things I'd personally do, but I can't unfortunately.

You can't just add a glow effect and think it'd be nice. You have to adjust to the background, too,
and as for the background, I'd definitely add more textures and styles to it.
It's simple yes, but too simple. Anyone can do it and layer that brush over it with the rising sun effect.

Definitely try to change those elements, and choose another font to just put that cherry on top.
There's a lot of things I could help you with, mostly by showing you, but yeah.

Try checking some template websites for some ideas, too, especially the business websites.
Although they can be simple, it's stylish and attractive without having that newbie feeling to it. Professional basically.
