Shitsumon desu! I've frequently heard of the word "ue" affixed at the end of parental units, like "haha-ue" or "chichi-ue". What does it imply? Does it show respect? And when should you use it, when talking to them, or talking about them? Thanks a bunch, minna!  ��空����愛��人よ? Kono sora no dokoka itoshii hito yo? |

"ue" means "up". your right, it is a respectful suffix.

"Haha-ue" and "Chichi-ue" are very respectful and used when directly addressing the parent. When talking about them, I think generally "haha" and "chichi" are used, but not the forms that you use to address them, except for with siblings/family members. Usage is like how you use "Mom" and "Dad" in English (if you were speaking to an unrelated friend, you wouldn't say "I'm going to call Mom" or something like that). However, those forms of saying "Mother" and "Father" seem rather formal, and "Okaa-san" and "Otou-san" are more normally used; more informally (used more by children?), there's also "mama" and "papa", "kaa-chan", "tou-chan", etc. Correct me if I'm wrong. |
