Finally someone talk about lyrics, since nowadays people seem to enjoy only the melody of the song and forgot about the lyrics behind it. Not that it's bad, but the lyrics are also important, ne?

This is quite hard since I have many favorite songs with magnificent lyrics...
Depends on what kind of 'best lyrics' you are talking about. It can be that.....

- the words are poetic and puzzling but is awesome to hear, which is the forte of almost all of them VK bands.
- the lyrics use unusual gritty words, Japanese metaphors & idioms, innuendos, repetitions, slangs, masculine words, etc. Sounds awesome in Japanese, but lost its awesomeness when it's translated to English.
- the words rhyme in bouncy parts of the melody. Bonus points if the lyrics crammed up many syllables and still madly rhymes
- the lyrics are witty yet is meaningful, often portraying our daily lives. Bonus points if the melody is rocking.
- the lyrics vividly depicts the story and fleshes out the 'characters' and 'situations' so good that you feel absorbed into the song. AFAIK, Inaba Koshi aced this one.
- or it's just that damn beautiful that it motivates you or it brings you to tears.

unfortunately, almost all of the anime songs focuses on catchy melody and lacks on the lyrics department (one of the most bizarre examples is "Doki!" the OP of Ryofuko-chan)
most of the awesome lyrics belong to non-anime Japanese songs

anyways, I'm gonna post parts of some songs with lyrics that really moved me

"Niji" - L'arc en Ciel
Hontou wa totemo kokoro wa moroku
Dare mo ga hibiwarete iru
Furidashita ame ni nurete
Kimi wa mata tachidomatte shimau kedo
Shinjite kureru kara

Dare yori takaku sora e to chikazuku
Kagayaki wo atsume hikari wo motomeru
Moetsukite mo kamawanai sa
Subete wa shinjitsu to tomo ni aru

Truth is, our hearts are very fragile
Everyone can get broken easily
The rain is falling down fiercely,
but again, you stood and waited there,
because you believed in me

Higher than anyone, I'm closing to the sky
I seek that brightness, I search for the light
It's okay if I am burned
Every single thing is with a truth

WHY?
Great choice of words mixed with the mellow melody. With just a few keywords, you can imagine how the story flows, and how the writer feels deeply

The writer is seeking for something that may "burn" him. It's okay if the writer is to be "burned", since he already knows the satisfying truth, and if possible, "burn" the truth along with him.
In the whole song, it is told that the writer believed in this certain person, but a certain incident caused this person to become "bad". The writer, refused to acknowledge the fact that that person is "bad", cursed the existence of love and slowly began his search for the "truth"

IIRC, Hyde wrote this in memoriam of Sakura, who had just left the band back then due to drugs problems

"Raging River" - B'z

Tsumetai kaze ga fuite, hitori tachidomaru
Ukare sugita hibi ga itte, tsui ni michi wo mi ushinau
Kono sai nigete shimaou, dare mo tomeya shinai yo
Soredemo mae ni suzue motto, fumidasu ashi wa tsureteru

Yume wo egaite ita, sukoshi zutsu te ni iretekita
Nani hitotsu ushinau maito, itsu no manika obieteita

Subete ukeireru, yuuki ga hoshii
Rikari are kuruu kawa wo ima watarou

Stand up in the middle of the raging river, wash away, wash away
Dare ni mo iyase wa shinai, itami daite, tatakae
Struggle in the middle of the raging river, wash away, wash away
Kaeranu monotachi ni te wo futte, jibun no tameni, mou ichido
Wash away, wash away, itami daite, tatakae...

In the midst of blowing cold wind, I stand alone
The floating images of the past days disappearing
And next, I lose the sight of my road
Up until here I have run away, please don't anyone stop me
And then, I will keep on moving ahead, one step out and the other leg will follow

I painted my own dream, but my hand only did a small amount of it
What is that one thing which is missing?
Don't know since when I started to feel afraid about it

I accept everything that comes, but I still long for courage
Therefore I am now crossing that madly raging river

Stand up in the middle of the raging river, wash away, wash away
Don't anyone come to heal me, I embrace this pain and fight on
Struggle in the middle of the raging river, wash away, wash away
I wave my hands to those who are returning home, and for my own sake, one more time
Wash away, wash away, I embrace this pain and fight on...

WHY?
Reflective lyrics combined with the epic full orchestra melody, giving the image of a calm and serene riverside on the mountains. Sudden heavy guitar and change of tone in the lyrics on each chorus gives you the image of the struggle on the raging river.

The writer is running away from his designated life and is crossing the raging river, hoping to find that special something in the end of his journey. He always accept everything that befalls him, but now he longs for something that is missing in his life.
In the whole song, it is told that the writer sometimes misses his home, remembering his sweet memories, only to be swept away by the river and came back to the harsh reality, seasons passed by and the writer still continues his journey. You can relate this to "finding a path to reach enlightenment"

and on the final verse, the writer wishes good luck to those who have finished their journey and returning home, reminding himself that he still has a lot more to go, crossing that raging river.

"RUN" - B'z

Yokuma kokomade oretachi kita mon danato
Sukoshi warai nagara, omae tabako fukashiteru
Nani mo nai tokoro kara, tayori naku hajimatte
Kazoe kirenai kidoairaku wo tomoni sureba

Toki no nagare wa myou ni okashi na mono de
Chiyori mo koi mono wo tsukuru koto ga arune

Kouya wo hashire, doko made mo
Joudan wo tobashi nagara mo
Utaeru dake utao, miru mono zenbu
Naka naka nai yo, dono shunkan mo

Kouya wo hashire, kizutsu itemo
Shinzou yaburi no oka wo koeyo
Toberu dake tobou, jimen keri tsukete
Kokoro hirakeru, hito yo ikou

Ningen nante dare datte, totemo futsuu de
Deai wa doredatte, tokubetsu darou...

Dareka ga matteru, dokokade matteiru
Shinu nara hitori da, ikiru nara hitori janai

We have made it this far alright
Laughing a little, you blow out a puff of smoke
From a place where there was nothing, we began without relying on anyone
All this originated from countless happiness, pain, anger and disappointment

Time passes by and curiously it produces
a strange bound that is thicker than blood itself

Let’s run wild, wherever we go
While jokes fly around, filling the air
If you can only sing, then sing, for everything that we are seeing now
Every single moment is not simple

Let’s run wild, even if we get hurt
Let’s go over that hill where our hearts were broken one time
If you can only fly, then fly
Kick the earth and rise above
Open the heart and off the person goes

What is human being actually, so very ordinary
It is by meeting other humans that we become extraordinary...

Someone is waiting, waiting somewhere for you
When you die, you are alone
But when you’re alive, you’re not by yourself

WHY?
Lighthearted lyrics that reminds us to run even if we have achieved our target, because every single moment is precious. And we are not alone as long as we're alive, someone is waiting for us, somewhere in this world. Perfectly mixed with the light rock melody that is simple and full of hope.

initially, this is written for the crew and band members. Now, this is a staple song to end their LIVEs

I think that's my top three, in terms of lyrics that moved me

I love almost all the lyrics in Japanese, but there are a few songs who's english lyrics struck me too!

Hologram by Nico Touches the Wall

Invited by a pure white scenery now
I’ll go to a world that I still haven’t seen

As a lost child, I journeyed
Under the slate-gray sky
Many dreams blotted through the map that changes daily

I love that line because I can really relate to it. Often I will find myself getting trapped in something because at first I thought it was beautiful and innocent. Then I'll find myself lost and confused, realizing that all the dreams I had before have become lost.

Rinne Rondo by On/Off

If the white rose petals open one by one, will the memories from those days revive?
Illuminated by peace, the night that makes flowers bloom is sweet yet painful and becoming colorful

Like following a shining thread, time is flowing quietly
While people stick to the movement of flow and ebb, they are reborn

Your smile is the warmth that melts my chest
Like a faint dream that I had somewhere
Even if the present moment is cut out by the setting sun
Our shadows are overlapping

Like destinies that crossed each other, endless and far, boundless and deep
I grasped it again and again, I lost it again and again- The fact that we were finally able to meet
Like how the sky yearns for earth, the flowers wait for rain, and the night falls in love with tomorrow
I yearned so much for the fact that two hearts were one

If we can relieve ourselves from our long slumber and meet tonight
Then come on, let’s dance in our rondo

Like moving through the passed days, the moon is tender and clouded
And beyond my memories, love overflowed again

If I can walk through your time again, then I want to become a shadow and protect you
Even if the wind, blowing blindly, estranges us, please don’t forget about believing

Like an aimless sparkle, a fleeting wavering, and drifting illusions
Even while I wandered, I finally made it to the place that won’t change
Even if the darkness steals away the sun, lies cry to sins, and the past splits apart the future
As if I’ve been around, I’m certain that I chose this place

Like destinies that crossed each other, endless and far, boundless and deep
I grasped it again and again, I lost it again and again- The fact that we were finally able to meet
Like how the sky yearns for earth, the flowers wait for rain, and the night falls in love with tomorrow
I yearned so much for the fact that two hearts were one

If the white rose petals scatter one by one, will we be dyed by the tender morning?
And if I am reborn and I bloom in your chest, our love will become eternity

Because it so pretty!!

I think "Just Tune" by Savage Genius has meaningful lyric..... >.<

[english translation]
The things I want to protect are here
Following me without hesitation

The light red winds are afterimages of that day
Show hidden truth and scars that won’t fade
Reality that can’t be measured in equations
The melody of tomorrow that light shines on

My impulse is dashing through the dark sky like a blade
Higher, more and more than myself from yesterday!
How many times have I taken detours and stumbled?
To the dream I want to fulfill, Just Tune!!

Nobody becomes impatient
Longing for the stars that are cold and sparkling higher than the heavens
What can I do with these little hands?
Don’t hold on to pain all alone
Come here!

The deceptive moon whitely sneers
At the dramas that gushes out are incontrollable
I pretended to be experienced with “losing things”
I’ll say goodbye to the days where I pretended to be strong

Even if my existence is something small
This heart is Out of control!!

I’ll put everything on this moment called “today”
It’s okay if I get hurt, but there’s something I want to tell you
I can’t stay lost, I met you
I’ll continue to sing
Come follow me!

I always thought that my own scars came first
C’mon, to the sky we drew
Remove the limiter and take off! Freely!

I’ll put everything on this moment called “today”
It’s okay if I get hurt, but there’s something I want to tell you

The things I want to protect are here
Whether it’s fate, whether it’s a coincidence, its bond dear to me
What can I do with these little hands?
I’ll continue to sing
Come here!

aLiCe you picked a really wonderful song! Thos lyrics are really meaningful like you said. I especially like this verse:

KOE (VOICE)

[english Translation] :

If you're still alive, under the sea,
I'll cut off both my legs and become a fish.

If you come close enough for me to fall into the depths,
I'll become a shadow, wandering the endless darkness.

Entrancingly drifting in the air, my shimmering haze,
I only remembered the days that weren't granted to us.
You're not here.
I know that. I know that.

The rising, rising sun
Purifies this place.
The seal carved in blue
Is stolen away by the warm, warm wind.

If these words ever reach you,
I'll take my living body and throw it away.

A present that has erased my vivid wounds -
Your warmth that steals everything -
I longed for them, I searched for them
Even though they're illusions.

Your vanishing, vanishing warmth
Follows me to this place.
Your arms that could wipe away even punishment -
I want to sleep embracing them.

The rising, rising sun
Purifies this place.
Your arms that could wipe away even punishment -
I want to sleep embracing them.

Your vanishing, vanishing warmth
Follows me to this place.
The seal carved in blue
Is stolen away by the warm, warm wind.

The splinters of memories are rotting away.
The piercings that fill me aren't enough.
I'm forgetting - it's blurring -
Your voice disappears in the noise.

They're rotting, they're shedding -
The piercings that fill me aren't enough.
Without leaving a trace - I'm forgetting -
Your voice is becoming noise.

I think "alternative" from asura cryin 2 has very good lyrics too.

"After standing at many crossroads and struggling with my worries
Is my chosen road of thorns right? Or a mistake?
Tell me

Generally, every time when a harsh decision is forced onto me
It blocks my way out
I can't think of the opposite of "weakness"
being anything but "attacking"

In order to survive, I need you; in order to achieve it, my heart is uplifted
Dive, if I don't want to lose you
Even in the soured stench on the battlefield that was thrown out before I knew it
I'm accustomed to the Field
I was kissed by the dilemma of exclusively picking one of the two alternatives
Sign, on the day when time is up
Come at me! I won't run away

If I can redo it over and over again, then it's only convenient
I just don't want to reset my short life or anything
Nor do I want it to be

When I was cornered unexpectedly
Instincts embraced me
Nobody notices that the opposite of "strength"
might be "quivering"

In order to disobey it, I want to drift; for the sake of smiles, I want to be alive
Dive, even if it's a detour
The arranged encounter surely broadens my view
Release the Field
Simply put, that which you treasures also treasures you
Sign, on the day when time is up
I won't let go of love; I don't believe in nonexistent things

In order to survive, I need you; in order to achieve it, my heart is uplifted
Dive, if I don't want to lose you
Even in the soured stench on the battlefield that was thrown out before I knew it
I'm accustomed to the Field
I was kissed by the dilemma of exclusively picking one of the two alternatives
Sign, on the day when time is up
Come at me! I won't run away, I won't let go of love "

Hmm, that's hard. It would have to say "Lullaby" from Key the Metal Idol. The lyrics are so sad, but beautiful, mysterious, and poetic. They sound like a dark nursery rhyme. Here are the words and translation done stanza by stanza.

MUKUDORI YAMABATO KOGANEGUMO
OMURASAKI mo yume no naka
OTSUKIMISOU wa nemurenai
gin no shizuku wo nonda kara

A gray starling, a turtledove, a Japanese gold beetle,
and a giant purple butterfly, all in a dream.
The evening primrose can't sleep
because it drank the silver drop.

andoro-n doro-n naidoro-n
yoru no koe mori ni watareba
andoro-n doro-n naidoro-n
oyasumi yoiko
ashita sametara agemashou
KIICHIGO NATSUGUMI YAMABOUSHI

A dream, dream, no dream...
Voices of the night... If you traverse the forest...
A dream, dream, no dream...
Goodnight, my darling child.
When you wake up tomorrow, I'll give to you:
a raspberry, a summer oleaster, and a dogwood.

YUUSUGE KISUGE KONOHAZUKU
yofukashi NOUSAGI BENISUZUME
shippo no kireta TOKAGE no ko
kawari ni tsukeru RYUU NO TAMA

A day lily, a yellow lily, a screech owl.
Staying up late: a wild rabbit, a tiger finch.
A baby lizard without a tail...
In its place, a dragon jewel.

andoro-n doro-n naidoro-n
yoru no koe mori ni watareba
andoro-n doro-n naidoro-n
oyasumi yoiko
ashita sametara agemashou
GENGE no juutan mimi kazari

A dream, dream, no dream...
Voices of the night... If you traverse the forest...
A dream, dream, no dream...
Goodnight, my darling child.
When you wake up tomorrow, I'll give to you:
a carpet of Chinese milk vetch, adornments for your ears.

DOKUZERI ASEBI YAMAKAGASHI
MOZU no eda ni wa AMAGAERU
KITSUNE ga tabeta SHIKA no ko wa
tsuki no momo-iro mite shinda

A water hemlock, a Japanese andromeda, a grass snake.
On a branch with a shrike, a tree frog.
The fawn that was eaten by the fox
had looked up at the ruddiness of the moon as it died.

andoro-n doro-n naidoro-n
yoru no koe mori ni watareba
andoro-n doro-n naidoro-n

A dream, dream, no dream...
Voices of the night... If you traverse the forest...
A dream, dream, no dream...
Goodnight, my darling child.
When the Japanese cedar 'round back weeps,
don your red garb, and flee.

Goodnight...

I absolutely love the lyrics to Ketsui no Asa e. I've loved that song for a long time.

Be Human by Scott Matthews from Ghost in the Shell TV is hauntingly beautiful, especially the lyrics.

I analyze and I verify and I quantify enough
100 percentile no errors no miss
I synchronize and I specialize and I classify so much
Don't worry 'bout dreaming because I don't sleep --

I wish I could at least 30 percent
Maybe 50 for pleasure then skip all the rest

If I only was more human
I would count every single second the rest of my life
If I just could be more human
I'd have so many little babies and maybe a wife

I'd roll around in mud and have lots of fun then when I was done
Build bubblebath towers and swim in the tub
Sand Castles on the beach, frolick in the sea, get a broken knee
Be scared of the dark and I'd sing out of key

Curse when I lost a fight, kiss and reunite, scratch a spider's bite
Be happy with wrinkles I got when I smile
Pet kittens 'til they purred, maybe keep a bird, always keep my word
I'd cry at sad movies and laugh 'til it hurt

I'd buy a big bike, I'd ride by the lake
And I'd have lots of friends and I'd stay out too late

If I could just be more human
I would see every little thing with a gleam in my eye
If only I was more human
I'd embrace every single feeling that came in my life

Would I care and be forgiving?
Would I be sentimental and would I feel loneliness?

Would I doubt and have misgivings?
Would I cause someone sorrow too? Would I know what to do?

Will I cry when its all over?

When I die will I see Heaven?

Tobira by GReeeeN is very optimistic and cheerful.

Hey, lift your chin up and smile a little
I know you’ve been through a lot
And the story’s not going the way you thought it would

But tomorrow comes for everyone!
Time passes by and won’t wait for you
Don’t look away from the future you can see now

You’ll feel better once you realize nothing is pointless
Once you’ve given it your all you’ll feel refreshed
If you turn around, hey, do you see it? Look how far you’ve come
Don’t be afraid, take the next step forward!!!

*As you open what’s in front of you
Can you see what you’ll be like tomorrow??
You’ll surely find a new door ahead of you
That leads to “the new you”

Hey, why the gloomy face? I know it’s hard but let’s laugh together!
Even if you stay silent, each passing day, tomorrow, today, all have meaning
You just worry each and every second, marking off the calendar diligently
But nothing will ever wait for us so let’s take immediate action now!!!

If you just decide that it’s meaningless, you’re closing the door
Pretending you can’t see, pretending you can’t hear
All you have to do is decide what you can accomplish tomorrow
Don’t be afraid, take the next step forward!!!

**The key that opens your door has always been in your pocket
Look, if you open it now, I know that person will be right before your eyes
“The new you” is waiting for you

If you’re standing still and can’t seem to budge
I’ll softly give you a push you forward
If you can just take one step
Then I know you can make it on your own

Your “dream” and “emotions” will make it there someday!!!
Once you’ve given it your all you’ll feel great x 100!!!
But you know all that already, don’t you?
Embrace all your emotions so you can open the door, now step forward!!!

Hana no Nioi by Mr. Children is absolutely beautiful. The original music video is also worth checkin out.

I wish it would reach you, oh I wish,
even though this voice could never reach you
How I wish it could.

Thank you and Goodbye
I could never fully express this in words
but my heart gushes with them.

Lead by the scent of flowers
I reach out to the soft light
filtered through the trees overhead
it felt like we were holding hands through that warmth

I want to believe, oh how I want to,
I want to believe in the warm miracle in the hearts of man
I want to believe, oh how I want to believe
that a person’s life is the light that makes another’s shine.

even if this is goodbye forever,
I can hear you breathing
I just know that in some other form, with that same smile
we’ll meet again.

no matter what tragedies are buried in these places
there’s no doubt the seed of happiness is planted there.
when I’ve amassed enough tears shed,
I’ll water that seed with them.

I made my longing into a melody
when the wind carries away my whistling
somewhere, far away, with eyes smiling
you’ll be there listening.

even if this really is goodbye
I hear your warm breathing
I just know that in some other form, with that same gaze
we’ll meet again.
