Any anime recommendations?
Link | by n/a on 2009-04-09 13:40:29
I'm sure you guys get this all the time from new-folk like myself.
But I'm looking for recommendations as to anime to watch.
I like more mature shows; not mature as in loads of sex references and gore, but mature as in I don't like oddly girly looking pre-teen boys saving the world with the power of friendship/love.
I'm really quite fond of samurai anime, I like the realistic fights and cultural references (I'm not a huge Japanese culture buff but I do like seeing cultural references). So anything like Samurai Champloo or Kenshin will suit me perfectly.
But I'm not strictly looking for samurai anime, I pretty much like anything that's adequately mature and nice-looking. My all-time favourite is Cowboy Bebop, so if there's anything else that's like that then I'd love to see it.

So I guess I'm just wondering, really, is can anyone recommend me some moderately grown-up series (preferably short series, I don't really like watching on-going anime).

Let's see... Samurai Deeper Kyo is, obviously, about samurai. And it's pretty short, only 26 episodes.

'Peacemaker Kurogane' is about samurais, and it's quite good IMHO. I might have to get back to you on this, because I can't think of any other anime right now. ;P

Also, the 'Samurai Deeper Kyo' anime's kinda boring, I recommend the manga instead.

Um... I'll have to think about that for awhile. I'm not as fond of watching mature shows as I am of reading mature manga, since I used to love seinen manga.

Basilisk is samurai-ish, but mostly ninja with serious skills. Pretty graphic stuff, but it's addicting. And REALLY violent.

Spiral: Suiri no Kizuna has shoujo-ish designs, but the storyline is really good. Not samurai-ish either. Hmm.

Maybe you should try Vagabond, by Takehiko Inoue. Art is fabulous, and it's basically the life story of a legendary samurai, Miyamoto Musashi.

Oh! And if you can appreciate nature and Japanese folklore, try Mushishi or Natsume Yuujinchou.

Thanks a lot :)
I don't get to watch anime as much as I'd like so this will probably tide me over for a loooong time.

Try Blood+ ! It's sorta samurai-ish as it's main character is a sword weilding girl who has to kill the Chiropterans. :) Its quite a slow anime though, until starts going.
