Self-developed. You can do everything you want to do with it! =D I have only used my own engines so far since thats what I do, for other things like graphics I used Ogre. You can see one huge list at wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_game_engines If you want something thats really good, Source engine has been proven the best by far. Just look at moddb for examples and tutorials, as well as valve pages for more tutorials and forums for asking for help. If you think your game is popular you can discuss with valve to make a commercial game as well. Just look at Garry's Mod and Iron Grip, they are examples of how a mod gets developed into a full-fledged game. |

If you are looking for a way to get out of the RPG Maker phase, look for some simpler language with strong DirectX or OpenGL graphics support. For myself, I use/used Visual C# 2008 Express Edition (free to download) as well as the XNA Game Studios 3.0 Plugin (also free to download). It will take a bit of learning to figure it all out, but it's all very well supported and fully capable of meeting all of your needs. Couple links for ya: Visual C# (Just select English and click Download): http://www.microsoft.com/express/download/#webInstall XNA Game Studios 3.0: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=7D70D6ED-1EDD-4852-9883-9A33C0AD8FEE&displaylang=en Have fun and enjoy! For those hardcore programmer guys and gals out there, don't bash me cause I use C# and XNA, I also use OpenGL and DirectX with C++ (just saving myself from the hate XD) |

If you kind of hurry in making your own Game, then the RPGMaker is the best for you. Just start making some sprites and images for your home made game. But if you want a programming language in making your game, just try to use Java or Visual Basic. If you want you can try Visual Studio .NET and learn how to make a mobile games using those language. For Iino: As what Xiao said, where not bashing you because of what you said. For programmers, we know that some visual language have some experties or use. C++ is good to develop modules to be use in a game in order to make use of the DirectX or any ActiveX graphics for the effects and any graphic enhancement for your program. You can use C++ and Java or XNA + C++/Java/C# to build a game. I also make a 3D Animation in other platform (Windows) to be use to my game encoded in Python (Linux). But I need a converter for that. I don't know if there is a 3D Animator for Linux so I use Maya in Windows and coverted it to be use in Python for my first 3D Game Lesson in Linux. |

Ruy: Going out of topic here, but does directX makes a huge difference in making programs especially games? |

Xiao: DirectX is a collection of application programming interfaces (APIs) for handling tasks related to multimedia, especially game programming and video, on Microsoft platforms. (Came From Wikipedia) Although you can also make games without the use of DirectX medias only if you're developing a Game that need minor animation. For example: if you're making a flash games, Memory Game, Puzzle Game, RPG (2D), etc., the program rarely need DirectX to run, so in order to conserve memory and to not strain your Graphics card for a little task, it minimize the function of directX in your program or make it as default (no change). But if you're making a Games with 3D Effects and 3D Characters running simultaneously in the program, this will be needed. But if you ask me if DirectX is needed to some applications, it will depends on Animation and Graphical Effects to be added in the program by the programmer. I don't know if DirectX applied to Linux but there is a substitute application for that in use for Linux OS. |

Yeap, the famous WINE. Well I am asking about your personal opinion about DirectX. For me I feel that its the main reason why people got Windows over Linux and Mac, and why developers made their programs windows only. Only recent times where WINE and Open Source is popular is when people starts to pull away from Windows. In other words I really believed that Directx is the main draw of Windows which has certainly proved itself as the most successful API ever. I was really wondering if somehow the PC game industry could be DirectX independent. Personally most of the simple games I have made used DirectX with the only exception of one mobile game, obviously based on Java. |

Xiao: You got wrong about that. Different OS have different platforms and frameworks they supported. Although there are substitutes and emulators to be done, the platforms are the gap between them. Windows uses a user friendly platform only for their programs (mostly recommended for games and animation) while Linux have a platform that is more hangging out to be one of the good platform, but not OK for Animations and Effects. Mac is that too, but Mac is not recommended for gammers because of its availability. Macs are fix unlike PCs that you can maximize it. About WINE, it is not really dependable for emulating all programs from windows in order to run on linux. Its under test only and not yet updating. There is some bugs in WINES that can't run mostly 3D Games for windows. Mobile games are somewhat have a simple program that its looks like a directx, but it's not directx. Java is one of the good compiler that can develop its own platform. But when the Android is finally develop in its working version, this will eliminate all the gaps between platforms for all devices. |
