shoujo yaoi ect: theyre not that great are they?
Link | by imxyourxnightmare on 2008-12-25 09:46:09
okay im not sure if this is the right place to put this cause im not used to this forum thing but...
im an aussie (currently in japan whoop!!) and ive got friends from alot of other countries as well (most are otaku or close enough to it) but it seems to me that when it comes to us girls who love our manga, there seem to be very few who arent into either shoujo or yaoi. all my friends at school in aus are all into that kinda thing, and it bores the crap outta me when they launch into discusions about how hot kaname (vk) is or whatevers happening with absolute boyfriend (~.~zZ) ive managed to get them into some of the good stuff eg. dogs/bullets and carnage, bleach, elfen lied, deathnote, ergoproxy ect
but im starting to wonder are there any other girls out there who are fed up with these types of anime/manga or am i just odd lol XD

Your post kinda confusing. So let me rephrase some.
Shoujo = teenage girl
Shounen = teenage boy

guyxguy = shounen ai [softcore] = yaoi [hardcore]
girlxgirl = shoujo ai [softcore] = yuri [hardcore]

So if by chance you mean if there's any fans of either of that I'll say there's bunch of them here.
You might as well need to fix the thread title so it'll be clearer.

It's all about personal taste... There are definitely girls out there who much prefer shounen Manga. So when you say "good stuff" like Elfen Lied, Bleach, or Ergoproxy, I'd have to disagree, because I personally prefer seinen.

Maybe you don't realize it, but Death Note has become a very commercialized Anime/Manga... If anything, I'd have to say shounen (Naruto, Bleach, etc) is the over-rated genre. However, I actually enjoy Naruto, Bleach, and Death Note~

Anyway, I love all types of genre~ It's the story that's important.

I agree that this is about personal taste, and you shouldn't change your friends' tastes by getting them into stuff you enjoy.

I have not met one girl who has anything against Yaoi or even Yuri, to the extent where they want to rip their hair out.
First of all, no girl would ever do that in any given situation, duh! :P
And second, I think for the most part girls enjoy those types of anime/manga.
In fact most of the girls I know online, in person, etc. wherever, enjoy more Yaoi/Yuri related stories, mostly relating to romance/drama/school-life/etc. than regular ones.

I have to say they ARE pretty darn popular, especially online, and the stories do seem interesting and good.
I've watched a few Yuri-related anime before and I've even seen Gravitation, which in my personal opinion was pretty darn good ('cept for certain parts in the anime).

But overall, it's like comparing an anime genre to another anime genre, or which is better: anime or manga, etc.
All I have to say honestly is if you don't enjoy them, then it's whatever, just watch whatever you like. I have never given a darn anyways, haha.

While "recommending" is a much better term, all have been said already. As much as preference of the kind is their choice alone.

I, myself and a few others have the "been there, done that" attitude for quite some time. I tend to avoid the mainstream shows like Naruto and look for the diamonds in the rough. Although, I do have a personal preference of the type that I would like to see. But still be able to maintain an open mind to view the everything fairly. You know the type.

Still, I have to be open to recommendations as well. And see if it is indeed my cup of tea. You should never avoid a recommendation and at least give a chance to check it out.

@d-a: i actually don't enjoy reading yaoi, yuri or their more toned down counterparts, and i'm a girl. while i wouldn't rip my hair out (that would hurt X_x) and while i do put up with people talking about it, i don't like how many girls put many characters into such situations so often, even when it's not canon. in fact, it annoys the hell outta me that i have to sift through pages upon pages of yaoi/shonen-ai when looking for humour stories (NOT involving romance for once) including my favourite Kingdom Hearts characer Zexion, and i can only find a handful compared to all the other stories. the only yaoi/shonen-ai book i own is Loveless, and i was attracted by the kitty ears, not realizing what it was.

someone i saw somewhere best said it: "I'm not anti-yaoi; I'm anti-everything-HAS-to-be-yaoi". i don't like how almost everything focuses on yaoi, but i'm not totally against it. if a series is like that, so be it. but if it's not, that's pushing it for me.

i read shoujo, yes, but frankly, i'll read almost anything at least once. i prefer humour and action over romance, but what the hey. it's something to read. if the story's good enough, the characters' interesting, why not?

nightmare, you're just going have to put up with it. shoujo is directed at teenage girls, as is yaoi. you can't impose your opinions and likes on others. i personally got bored of Death Note halfway through, and while i do enjoy Elfen Lied, Bleach and Naruto, i'm not about to try and force my friends to think like me (even if most of them are boys, which may also be a factor in my tastes). speak up if you feel YOU'RE being imposed on (i.e. your friends are trying to get you to read yaoi/shoujo/other when you don't like it). it's all subjective.
