Requirements for being a voice actor/actress?
Link | by on 2008-11-30 15:05:59
I am extremely interested in trying to be a voice actress one day. However, I haven't any clue how to go about it. Do I need to take a course in college, university? Can I just waltz in and be all HI I WANNA TRY WITHOUT ANY EXPERIENCE?

Please help me. ;_;

Yeah you'd probably have to go to College for this: Voice Actor (Wiki).

Without any experience will get you nowhere unless you're born with a voice and get noticed by this quick.
Those people are lucky and are usually successful depending on where they go with it.

Depending on what grade you're in now, I'd start practice right away like participating in speeches and drama club type stuff.
Just to get that nervousness out of the way, because that's one factor you'd have to overcome if you're going to be a voice actor in the business.

Good Luck with your aspirations =)

There's a college for voice acting??? Wat.

I think you should do your own voice-acting sessions, your own time. Read scripts, whatever, and be experimental at what expressions suitable to the lines. It's all common sense and passion. Observe other voice-actors/actresses' ways, actors as well (to capture facial expressions, of course. that way you can use certain tone to voice an angry/sad/joyous/evil anime character etc).

Good luck then :D

Thank you so much for your input, everyone. :3

But I'm more curious if it's absolutely necessary to take a college/university course...

Well how else are you going to become a professional voice actor?
You should research the topic, and ask for help for guidance.

So my mom is actually a dubbing director. Dubbing is basically voice acting, but multi-lingual. Her basic requirements are thus:

1.You have to have a good voice. This could be worked out minimally, like as long as you stand out(in a good way), there would be a chance that you would have a part. This part is rather luck. I could send a sample of you voice to my mom if you'd like, to see if you have that stand-out quality. If you do, Pm me and expect the worst. She is very strict about this.

2. You have to listen. No matter how good or bad you think you are, all you have to do is listen to what people in the profession say. They know what they are talking about and you always listen to make them feel that you really want to learn, and to make them feel that you are willing to accept what they tell you

3.Have passion for the art. Yes, that is what my mom said. It truly is an art. It is basically making a movie, but restricting all emotions to focus in your voice. You have to really want to participate in it. Mostly, your directors will know what they want you to do. Listen and don't give your opinion unless absolutely need be. If you want it, you practice, and practice, and never stop practicing.

Thats about it for the requirements. It's a rough industry... I got out of it after the pressure of the other people breathing down my neck cuz my mom was the director, but it may be different for you. You can start at any age, no true need for a college course unless you need to learn the basics.

That's basically it. if you do want my mom to listen to your voice, just pm me. I'm available any time. GL

I'll try to research some more, Devils-Angel. Thank you. :3

And mystuhmusic, I greatly appreciate that you've taken the time to run me through the requirements and even offer to have me analyzed by a professional. I would be far more than willing to give you a recording for a thorough and tough critique to examine, however, I'm waiting for my microphone to get replaced, which hopefully will be before Christmas.

I DESPERATELY want to take part in dubbing entirely. When I look into my future, having a job as a voice-actress is a MUST for me--it's something I'm absolutely sure I want to aim for. Not only that, but I have a dream to one day be an inspiration to any whose curious to be a voice actor/actress. Very similarly to how my idol affects me.

Anyway, all that aside... if you could run me by what I will be judged on, I'd appreciate it. (Such as, any lines in specific I should say, or what emotions I should express in my own words, etc.)

Thank you so much for your help and consideration. :3

uhm join auditions. If your schools has a radio maybe you could DJ a little, might help with your voice training.
maybe for now just have fun acting out some characters you like.

I have seen some fan dubs on youtube. maybe you could check those out.

The college I plan to go to has a radio room which I'm interested in, especially because my older sister who is in college tells me about all of this great stuff. Like the people currently there are hysterical.
I'm very two-faced, I've noticed. I have my good days and my bad days, and depending on if it's good or bad, my voice changes. So I have fun with that. I also quote various characters, try to imitate voices, but that's a bit harder than just fluently speaking in my own tones.

I've noticed the fan dubs on youtube. :3 I was considering joining one for the ToS OVA as Colette Brunel. But my mic hasn't been replaced yet. ;3;

Thanks~.

The thing about this is, and I'm just guessing, you have to have consistency.
You can't let personal matters or whatever else, get in the way, or it will not only be bad for you, but for the whole crew/cast/etc.

If you're a senior, or even a junior in HS, I'd recommend researching for this college and see if you're going to commit to it.
Currently I'm doing this now and I'm so lazy with it, so try not to be like me, haha.
If they have a website for their university, try to find out as much about their courses, what they require out of HS, etc.

The best chance I have is a college acting class, but that is also a three-year-program, and it may not even work out in my benefit. Not only that, but apparently it is EXTREMELY difficult to get into the acting class, and even then it's more for acting and not voiceovers. And going into acting requires a lot of drama class marks and whatnot, and thus far I've only had one drama class (just because of how the classes were arranged), and my teacher never liked me. X_X

So for the first three years of college, I'll most likely go into something I have a better chance in (aiming for 3D Animation and Graphic Art), and then I'll try acting.

I'm sure I have to have consistency, which also troubles me a bit. Because the yearly pay for being a voice actress seems well and good for an easy job (some 47 thousand a year, if memory serves), but that won't get someone by. So, I always saw voice-acting as a part-time job type thing? Gah, how confusing.

Yeah, depending on where you're currently living now, you might have to search for other colleges nation wide.
It's hard cause you'd have to move out of your city/town and start somewhere new, not only being far, far from home, like states possibly.

It's all about that research, but I'd ask for professional help as well if that's alright.
I've never heard of taking up voice-acting as a part time job. If you're not wanting a full career out of this, it seems pointless to me unless you enjoy it a lot,
but if you have a bigger passion for this, a part time gig just wouldn't do for me personally.

47K a year may not be the limit, but it's not like you'll fail at life with it.
It's near the average salary in this country, more or less, more less, but yeah.
It's not like you're LeBron James coming out of High School into the NBA, that's like rare talent that comes every few years.
Unless you think you're someone like that, for voice acting in this country, then you'd start slow and build your way up.

Oh, and if you're a GFX designer, the sky's the limit and salaries for this are different in so many ways.
Just worry about now and the next few years rather than after, though that's also important, too, at least to me anyways.

If you get a degree in acting, you probably could later do voice overs, possibly.
Again it depends on your actings skills and your voice mainly.

And like, what do you want to do voice overs for, anyways?

That seems really frightening to me. Moving away. Especially because I'm only 15 years old. xD; Mmm but it has to happen sometime, right?

Mhm, definitely. I want to know all I can before I jump the gun.
I'd love to see myself as having a full-time job doing voiceovers, but it's very... hmm, how to put it... it varies greatly? Unlike a steady job with a steady salary. With voice acting, it's all over the place--depending on if you get the part or not. Which is what worries me.

Being a voice actress has always been my dream. For as long as I can remember. o3o;

Is it? I didn't know. o3o; I always thought it wasn't very good--then again I don't know anything. xD; AND LOL.

I hope to have some kind of chance.. I hear some voiceovers that SUCK terribly and I think 'I'm sure I could do better than that'. (That sounds extremely egotistical of me, but. x_x)

Mhmm, no, I get it. :3 I worry about my future and I get really wound up about it. I think I should relax a little and see where I go. But it's always nice to have a bit of reassurance.

What I HOPE to do would be along the lines of game and anime voice-overs. They seem like a lot of fun.

Oh you didn't tell me you were only 15. You're worrying about college a bit early, which is okay in this case,
but worry about getting experience first, right? I mean you have two or three years to get it so try to get into some activities.

Around that much a year is not the best, but not the worst either, like you can do better or worst depending on how you do.

If you're trying to do dubs for games/anime then find the nearest company near you or if there's any anyways.
Find some universities, research some universities as well, and see what they did to get prepped up for this.

Dubbing anime in general is poor though, lol, so try to be one of those that do good on good dubs. XD

Aw I'm sorry to have confused you, or made you think otherwise. xD~
Mhmm, I plan to join some drama preformances at my school, but the issue with that is they only let those who are in 11th grade participate in such plays and stuff, and I'm only in tenth grade. So that cuts down on some time. Gah, I feel like it's such a rush.

My best bet for anything relatively near (mind you I live in Quebec, Canada--so it's not like Toronto), would be in Montreal. I haven't a clue if there's any kind of dubbing studio in Quebec. All I know of is Ocean Studios in Toronto. GOD HATES ME. ;_;
Anyway.

Oh beliiievveee me. I absolutely HATE dubs. Save for a few voice actors here and there that do a good job. So I hope to surpass the generic outlook on english dubs. xD;

You can use that year to do some self-prep, self-practice if you will.
Then the following year you'd be ready with some self-taught-experience, which would help you out in more ways than one.

And yeah, I live in the US, but you could go to college in the US depending on other details.
That might be tough, but I really have no true knowledge on this, haha.

And yeah, try to see if there's any good Canadian anime voice actors. :D

Lol be like Gundam Wing dubs, those were fine, or Dragon ball Z dubs, which made Goku much less annoying... XD My mom said that if you want to send a recording over, just record yourself talking in everyday life. Don't act. That screws up how she judges your voice. And its good that you realize your "calling" at 15, I know some people that just discover themselves in college. Just remember to stick with it for as long as you can, peoples' minds change.

Practicing should just involve you matching your everyday voice into a character or such. Don't over exaggerate and don't like do accents and stuff. I know alot of people that are good with accents, but genuine voice is much better sounding and you should always start with that. Purity is more important than variety. That's what my mom always says. ^.^

L got a point there.
natural voice is indeed better. there are those dubs that have weird accents on them that really just doesn't work(normad sounds like a pig).

I just remembered a blog on animax where they interviewed their dubbing crew. those guys gave some tips about voice acting. I think its somewhere between February to April post. those guys are a bunch of interesting people. to bad 2 of their members left already.

Toronto, so that's were ocean studios is. I still like animax dubs over Ocean Studios. Aniplex also does great dubs.

here is one of the interviews.
there are also a couple of interviews on December 2007.

here's an interesting post.

Wow it's awesome that you mention Gundam Wing and DBZ. They were dubbed by Canadians at Ocean Studios--where I hope to go.

Mmkay, I'll see what I can do~. Thank you. :33

@Bonta,
LOL. Thanks. I'll look into it. :3
