Well, I'll admit the majority of dubs never live up to the original Japanese dialouge, but there are very notable excemptions. I personally think the English Fatal Fury acting is a lot better than the Japanese ones. Ranma's dub used to be good until they replaced Sarah Strange with Richard Cox.

A couple of other dubs I can never really find myself hating again is the 1995 Sailor Moon dub and Ronin Warriors/Samurai Troopers.

I normally watch stuff in dub. first to be able to view the art&style of it (& all) then I watch it w/sub. to get the feel of the anime. B/c I can't read all that sub. & have time to enjoy the show w/all of it's bueaty& work.
40% of the anime I only seen dub. anyways and the other way around too. So I was either hate the second way or fine w/both ways. It is all basically that you got used to the sub. voices & all. & the same can be sayed for dub. lovers who (normally) manyly watch tv series.
I like it either way for 90% of my shows i watch but about 6% of them I can't stand dub. & 4% of them I can't stand sub.. Only b/c I normally was used to the voice Actors/Actresses of the series one way first & they end up too different the other way.

Do you all know what I am trying to get at?

Never date a guy stranger than you. If so, make sure he's loaded.

So far, the only dub I am sorely upset with is what they did to Cardcaptor Sakura. They took it and butchered it into a different show. They changed the show name, character names, story line, aired about half (if that) of the episodes, had bad voices, Pronounced names horribly, changed anything that had to do with Japanese culture and made it Americanized, it made me cry.

I don't like how harshly some animé get edited when dubbed, such as Cardcaptor Sakura, or bits of other shows like Dragonball and such. Luckily for me, Inu-Yasha is done beautifully. Same as the Japanese version, with only the voices dubbed over and the credits changed to English text, that's what I enjoy. Lucky for me, most of the animé I watch isn't dubbed too poorly, some dubbed quite well.

All depends on who grabs it first, I suppose.

I get you, Chick-yasha. I pretty much feel the same.
I actually prefer to watch the origional Japanese, but now that suitable translations are available, it's good to be able to watch it in english and be able to completely focus on the beautiful art.
Still, it's funny how very much still gets lost in translation, so while I appreciate that the dubbs are really far superior now, I feel it's better to watch it in Japanese to get the origional intent of the director and actors.
It really is true that most of the translations are much better now. There are only a few production houses that continue to hack 'n slash good anime now, most only change the voice track and the print in the credits.
Unfortunately, one of them is Funimation, and they have some really strong buying power in the Anime Import market right now. So, they end up grabbing some really great titles then butchering them before anyone else can get 'em.
They also have a contract with cartoon network and that's why you usually see their stuff on it.
>o<
I try to avoid buying anything from these houses, as I refuse to give my money to butchers. It's really hard, tho, 'cause as I said... they end up getting some good stuff I'd really like to see.
:(

i don't know why dubs get so much hate. are you only watching anime on tv? buy the dvds. some series have excellent dubs, i.e., read or die ova.

There are a few decently done dubs, I agree, but I guess it just depends on which company's doing the dubbing.

Funimation went to HELL with Fruits Basket, Sakura Taisen, the Tenchi series, and Yuyu Hakusho, and probably a few that I've missed. But they did okay on, well, not everything else, but...

Tell me, who ELSE is getting SOOOO sick of *spits* Laura Bailey's voice? Funimation uses her for EVERYTHING! Tohru, Keiko, chibi Trunks, that girl from Blue Gender... I swear...

ha!
when it comes with the spanish(latin) dubbing, i think theres only 1 company made up by 5~6 ppl

in other words:
every anime has the same voice actors

*laughs* So much anger...^.^
Personally, if I'm watching a dvd I'll just switch on the Japanese audio because it's more 'educational' ( I've remembered more Japanese grammar by hearing it being once on an anime than trying to remember it ten times from a book...but I've also completely forgotten how to speak in the polite form...)
However, if there's a series on TV I'm interested in and I don't have the money to buy the entire dvd box set I'll watch it in dub and hope they did a decent job...no matter how painful it may be...
I'm not sure how the dubbing process works but aren't they supposed to have someone to help them pronounce the Japanese names? It sure doesn't seem that way. People always stare at me when I say names like 'Kyoshiro' (not Kee-oh-shih-row) or when I pronounce double vowels/consonats.

I agree. me, I have learned more vocabulary from classes, but have managed to hold on to what I know better by watching anime in Japanese...(and music too...) as I have very few people to practice with here...
*sigh*

quote:
" Tell me, who ELSE is getting SOOOO sick of *spits* Laura Bailey's voice? "
Hahahaha!
And how about the 5 actors at ADV! Really now, haven't they made enough money to at least hire more talent?
...or even just the talent part...
Well, that's a bit harsh... some of them aren't so bad... but it'd be easier on the ears if there were more variety.
*evil grin*
I challenge you to name me one anime Funimation hasn't butchered?
Can't think of one myself...
Is it any wonder we're so bitter? :D

*time to go back to my cage...

Well to me Funimation is both good & bad.

Their dubs are TERRIBLE...
but on their dvds, the subtitled version is very good.

Of course!
but there was one english dubbed song that I liked.

Talent for Love, the ending from the OVA tench muyo. Actually I like the english one better than the japanese version. But thats the ONLY one.

It really depends on the Anime -- most now are keeping the original music, but unfortunately some thing *DNANGELCOUGH* have AWFUL dubbing. Die Daisuke's english voice.

On the other hand, Boogiepop Phantom has a truly awesome English dubbing, with a great translation and very good voices.

SUBS RULE!!

most of today's dubs are pretty bad (especially since most are done by "kiddie caroon networks"; HEAR ME OUT HERE 4Kids!!!), but there are some exceptions to that. Ocean Group's dubbing of Gundam Seed was pretty okay IMO.
