Hey there smart people! I'm currently studying at Monash University. I was assigned to construct a landing platform for an egg drop from a height of one storey. The landing platform should only be made using Paper! Paper Only Except tissue paper.. Plus.. Platform must be of only Length:30cm Width:30cm Height:6cm.. And egg must be NAKED! Any ideas on how to construct this??? O.o

Meaning, no harness or cushioning device attached to or surrounding the egg. I think the optimum landing is a smooth deceleration. In order to provide the smoothest possible deceleration, apply the smallest possible mean average force. Force is applied in quanta over time (the egg will fall through one piece of paper at a time). You could use an application of the force of gravity to calculate how much force/second over one story. However, an heuristic solution is what you need since we don't know the amount of drag on an egg falling through a piece of paper. My advice: drop an egg from a successively increasing height over a piece of paper, until it breaks. Reduce the height be about 25% for safety. Then, construct as many successive layers of this as possible. Now, if you manage to have this landing tower one story tall, you're done. Since that's not likely, you'll have to adjust for the initial velocity, which may be very great. So, a non-face-first approach (i.e. folding the paper) may need to be employed. Not sure. Good luck.

if you can't use tissue paper, try paper towels O: probably brawny's thickest brand.

LoL! Tissue Papers/Paper towels cannot be used in this project. *Update* Marks are given based on the ratio of the height of drop:the height of platform. The platform is around <2cm and arranged sliced up newspapers into a honeycomb design.. Plus I placed a piece of newspaper layered with double sided tape so that the egg will not roll onto the floor and CRACK! The thing is that I'm not too sure whether it'll turn out right on that day as in tomorrow! LoL! As my previous project was a disappointing one where I had to invent an eggcart and using only 1 tiny rubberband, propel it at least 3m.. It went only around 2.5 metres! Ughhh.. Sad case! And in the next project, I'll have to construct a structure to stop an alarm clock from ringing (marks based on design and creativity) involving 5 motions. Rotational, Oscillation, Sliding, Rolling and Falling. An object in that structure can only have one motion at one time. Means an object cannot be rotating and oscillating at the same time. Time: at least 20 secs.
