you know how you get wiser with age?
like, when you're a kid, your world is small, just family and school and tv or whatever.
then, as you grow up, you find out more about the world, and your consciousness grows.
this growth never stops, and by the time you're hecka old, your consciousness is huge.
you know several generations of people and you've seen lots happen on earth.
at the moment of death, your consciousness expands to infinity.
since it is spread out so wide, encompassing everything - living and dead, past and future, large and small - it can no longer hold on to your body.
the consciousness looses its influence over the body.
the body, now lifeless, tries to find the consciousness.
in doing so, it breaks down into it's composite parts - individual molecules - and spreads out across the world.
by doing this the body, too, becomes a part of eternity, and in doing so returns to the consciousness.
this is time-independent, too.
looking at time reversed, from the point of death, back towards birth, the molecules of the body which were coming together appear to spread apart, rejoining the whole world.
during the time that both body and consciousness are infinite, it can be said that one experiences everything.
after death lies an infinite timeline of infinite awareness.

naw, i'm just effing with ya. when you die, you end. that's it. game over man, game over.

Gendou, i wanna marry you.

That makes the most sense comparing to everything else i've heard about this matter.

Honestly, the only thing there is, is just that, opinions.

And now... my opinion lies on what Gendou said. It just makes that enough sense to be true.

"Life is change, chaos, filth and suffering. Death is peace, order, everlasting beauty."Adopt one today!

wtf? I'd like to know what religion you practice shige-sama, I don't think I've heard of heaven and hell portrayed that way.

back on topic: this may contrast with Gendou's epic statement, but when you die you probably just lose consciousness. forever. It's kind of eerie thinking about it. no longer existing. just, blackness, maybe. Idk. I used to spend alot of time thinking bout that when I was in 7th grade. imagine having no conscious. wonder what it would feel like? probably nothing, since you wouldnt be able to feel anythin after death XD

when you die, your body ceases function, and as your brain goes out, so does your consciousness along with it. You cease to be, the end. I know this idea seems to bother many people, but I could never understand why they so strongly insist the case is otherwise, it seems, to me, to be the ultimate act of selfishness and arrogance, that humans can believe that after they die, they get to keep on existing [I mean one's self or self, since obviously your body's physical components endure]. And I apologise if my statements seem at all rude to those who think differently than I do, any offense is not intended.

I want my soul to rest in peace once I reached beyond death. Nothing else I should do after that. (why bother? I don't like haunting ppl xD)
And I don't believe there is Heaven and Hell. We are not supposed to do materialistic things for the so-called 'afterlife' i.e. say a lot of prayers, do charity, whatever those 'good' deeds. It's nothing.

Death is a part of the cycle~ animals die without looking up the clouds, thinking over the afterlife, asking god for mercy. They're more realistic than us.

Gendou, epic speech, once again.

"life after death = METAPHYSICS "
does not make sense O_o

and yes, I must agree with rocketG. it seems only logical.

@ray: You may with to read the last line of my post very carefully (make sure it's the VERY LAST LINE).

Also, I think I understand what shige is trying to say.
The soul and the afterlife are not scientific theories.
They are metaphysical ideas.
It is a mistake to attempt to apply scientific theory to metaphysical ideas.
By this I mean that no sensible discussion can be had arguing one in terms of the other.
This is important when discussing the afterlife.
An argument about some property of the afterlife based on physical theory is irrelevant to the discussion.
Similarly, an argument about some property of physical theory based on the afterlife is irrelevant.

Since I personally believe in nothing metaphysical, I understand the afterlife as poetry and nothing more.
Insofar as metaphysical ideology is artful and beautiful, I appreciate it.
When it is ugly (as in the Catholic Hell and Vengeful Ghosts), I detest it.

And one more thing that's on my mind!
The whole idea of an afterlife, as rocketg eluded to above, is terribly egotistical and narcissistic.
Egotistical because it is the overextension of the ego beyond it's actual bounds.
Narcissistic because it speaks to such adoration of the self that the imagined loss of the self brings on the first stage of grief: denial.
Not to mention, the very origin of the concept of an eternal afterlife is as a method of religious control over people.
How are you going to convince someone to throw their life away for you, their leader?
Easy, tell them that this life is but the beginning of an eternal paradise that they will go to strait away after they've finished their duty as cannon fodder or human explosive device.
Despicable. I can't stand to analyze it any further, it's too sickening.

Now this is very interesting for me...
Life after death...
My opinion on this is...
It depends I'd rather go on the flow...
cause what I did in my life is what I did...
What ever happens to me in my after life...
Was totally my own doing...
& I accept what happens to me...

Belief in some kind of extension of your life after death isn't that bad. Faith gives good vibes. But it's kinda like the overoptimism in preparing for an exam, if you hope to luck it out without studying at all, you'll probably fail and learn nothing. If you place your trust in the work you do instead of bad odds, you'll ultimately be happier.

Likewise, if you accept that your only afterlife will be your body dispersing and feeding the worms of the earth, you'll probably be able to live a better life.

Afterlife is something some damn priests invented in order to make people feel weaker, and to enable them to rise in power.

As for what's beyond death, the Vedas have an answer: Eternal Unity, called the Brahman. You just vanish, and the very next day, you're part of the eternal matter the universe is made out of. Kinda similar to the 'From dust thou cometh, to dust thou returnest' concept.

If there's something beyond my current life, I'd rather not find out prematurely.

Either way, it can't be proven or disproven using science.

If each mistake being made is a new one, then progress is being made.

we just cease to "be". and people usually don't like the idea of pain, physical or emotional... that is why many of us think of ideas that would ease our minds on stuff that would, in our particular opinion, give us pain or grief.

wanting to live forever became natural to us, cause this world is do damn good to live in... who would want to go away from it? the problem is that we are not infinite, there is no reason for us to be infinite... and taking into consideration how nature treats its living things after some time that they have lived no matter how long, we have no right to be infinite.

why do we have to be special anyway?

+-+ Do you know what's a god? A god was once human, but he could things others could not. That's why he became a god. +-+

@ Gendou, I think that last line was unnecessary for me to read (I know you're an atheist, so why should I care that you detest the catholic concept of hell?)

Life after death huh? Well who has said that we humans have even the basic tools to ask such a question. Unlike what people tend to believe, we can neither prove or deny our own existences. Since written history has been understood, we humans love to create answers to ideas, events, objects, and fears... in other words, we are the creators of gods. When plants would grow in the spring and die in the winter, we humans (Greeks) created the story of Persephone. Etc. (To be continued)

I am merely speaking on a psychological level. I am not belittling any god one may believe in. I was merely stating my opinion, to which I have right to share.

I don't believe in Heaven or Hell. I don't want to.

I don't want to decay either.

I am not comfortable with the idea of living life again, thank you very much.

What do I want?

I want to get shot to find out. >.> Honestly.
