Is it okay to discuss here? That's good, I hoped that it would be working when I visit it in September. Though I don't think I would notice it working nor understanding what they can detect in those experiments... -.-   |

You're visiting CERN in Sepember?! How sweet is that! I suppose there are some public tours of the facilities, but not underground while the ring is cold.

I thought it had already been activated. But then again, i haven't heard anything about it for a while. I'd like to visit CERN one day, one of my teachers is working as a programmer for the LHC. ^^ (<---- Show off.)  |

Awesome! Could you introduce me to this teacher of yours? Well, right now the LHC is in cool down, which takes a really long time. It's like a 17 mile long refrigerator that is set to cool down to −271.25 °C.

Yes very close. It's even colder than the cosmic microwave background radiation.

What do they use to cool the ring to that temperature and maintain that temperature?

I heard about it. Liquid nitrogen if i'm not mistaken, in the pipes. Or vaccum. Can't remember. |

Of course I'll be taking pictures and post them here. But as Gendou said the possibility of being able to capture the ring is not too high. Initial cooldown is with liquid nitrogen. After they reach about 80K they change to liquid helium at atmospheric pressure to cool down to the operational temerature of about 2K. I don't think I can take photos at that temperature. :D |

LHC successfully operational as of Sept 10, 2008 Now we will wait for the end of October for the very first high-energy collision. Proud that my university is taking part of the research team. Now we can FINALLY test if we went wrong or not in the Standard model. |

LHC WOOO!!! Yep, it'll take a while to get fully running. Hopefully the end of the world isn't nigh. A good friend's (somewhat unfairly intelligent) older brother is majoring in theoretical physics at Caltech, and he's gone to CERN with his professor to work as part of the LHC team, the damn genius. Soooo jealous. I'll see about getting some pictures up, if he's willing.
Maka here is an wonderful example of why it's a bad idea to home school your children.
Maybe also a good example of why inbreeding is a bad idea, although the paternity test has not been done to say for sure.

The LHC has broke, something to do with the helium pipes. It will take two months to repair. First real experiment will probably be in November or December. |

Seems the problem occurred exactly the day after I visited CERN. As predicted, we couldn't go down to the "one ring to rule them all". We started with the proton source(sorry for the crappy pics, my cellphone cam's not the best. Maybe I can get the pics my teacher made):  The protons are then brought into this(I think it was Linac2):  This is where the magnets were fabricated.  The Niob-Titan-cable for the superconducting magnets (more than 8T) One cable is the same as having the pack of those black ones:  Transverse cutting of the LHC magnets.   |
