That really depends on your computer and what codecs/filters you have as well as what format of the episode. If you have an old computer, VLC by itself will suffice for xvid and some lower resolution H264 mkv files. Since most (but not all) mkv files released nowadays are softsubtitled (meaning all the translated lines are in a separate text file where the information is read, loaded and played real time with the audio/video), if your computer cannot render them fast enough, you will experience lag issues. For handling softsubs, try CCCP with MPC or Zoom Player. Last I heard (and experienced painfully firsthand), VLC does not render softsubs correctly, and you'll experience subtitle collisions (the dialogue lines will appear on top of each other) as well as default font styles (I believe default is white colour and arial font for VLC).

So yeah, try and find what works best for you. If you still have problems, let us know what file you are trying to play as well. I mean, if you have a really outdated computer, mkv + h264 + softsubs + 1280x720 = out of the question!

Recommendations:

Good/Decent Computer: CCCP + MPC/Zoom player.

Old Computer: VLC

*I just used mkv files as an example since the majority of fansub releases now use the mkv container (it has many advantages). The other most common type will be the standard avi file, which still hasn't been phased out yet.
