How does one lead an effective and fun anime club?
|
hello, next semester will be a third attempt at my school's anime club (which is, quite frankly, a piece of crap). I would like to know how everyone else's anime clubs run things, what their rules, how people behave, how you deal with unscrupulous individuals, and what you do in your weekly meetings. Here at Olympian High School, our anime club is filled with LOUD, OBNOXIOUS, and sadly, stereo-typical otakus, the kind that give otakus bad reputations. not only are the followers loud, but the officers think they can solve the problem by screaming at them to shut up. we also stopped having meetings like right around spring break, so declared by the club president, who isn't even a hardcore anime freak. how was she elected? can you say, 'popularity contest?' the topics we covered in meetings included, 'so what kind of anime do ya wanna watch?" and almost EVERY freakin mainstream anime was shot down when mentioned. then the leaders suggested a shonen-ai (I'm sure it's not as extreme as yaoi, haven't seen, only heard) Gravitation. another one was "What's yaoi/yuri?" oh god. that went well /sarcasm. and every (quite literally every) meeting has consisted of telling people to shut up. that basically sums up our weekly activities. oh, and we had a time where we would make mangas and make a shonen-jump thingy featuring our work, but our president kept extending the deadline cuz only 2 people were finished and finally she just gave up. I bring this up because quite frankly, I do not want another sheety year of an utterly pathetic anime club that is not fun at all. can you believe that? an Anime club being not fun? how sad. I humbly ask the citizens of gendou to help me make next year fun for the piece of crap we call [redacted]

@Aramis Remove your post or risk ban for stiring up a flare ! @Raystorm Omegawsh , your anime club seems to be in a horrible mess . I don't know how to fix it but I can give you a lil' bit help for now (I'll think of teh rest of suggestion , me ish kinda busy with mah health and my manga issue) First thing is , you'd better re-elect another president (You need a president who has knowledge on anime issue , like knowing teh history of anime , an average otaku itself [not a serious ones like your members are , or it might be pointless =__=*] , etc .) . Not hardcore is a lil' bad for a president , to me , a president of an anime club must have a high interest when it comes to anime and will do anything to promote anime in your school effectively through good planning and so on . Second thing is , your member needs more 'taming' . They're WAY too otaku'ish and might pollute your club's mission and name =__=* . Try to lay down some stricter rules so that they don't ..... you know :P , make your officer scream all along XDD . It is also best if you find a more 'less' otaku people also and people who is an expertise and certain things on anime ^^ . I'm sure there're more students out there who're curious or have some interest in anime too (anime-fans too), so try looking for them ^^ . *Thinks for more* >~< lll I think thats my some tips (hope it's useful ^^) . I got more , but I need to consider about it first ^^ . |

I was thinking over to create my own anime club too in my college... but that'll prove a hassle... You sound like you're better off being the club prez! Stop moping, go list yourself for anime club club prez! lolz jk Okay, sometimes being a club prez does not necessarily to need to gain massive knowledge on anime--- what's important for a club prez is to organise the events within the club, prepped up by the members who are filled with ideas and lots of anime knowledge. That makes more sense~ you know every member in the club will learn something (new or not) from interacting each other. Don't be too smug about it--- club prez re-election should be kept as plan b. So, the members are loud and hyper? Just shut them up, by saying witty stuffs out loud to make them laugh and settle themselves to silence. BUT You gotta respect the members too, regardless of their childish qualities, remember--- they want to feel belonged, so don't restrict their freedom too much. Please, take the advantage of running the anime club as not only for the anime-loving freaks, but also for those who want to expose to something new. Make the club as a different kind of school... I guess it's up to the level of interaction and variety of events within the club. Improve if needed. It's all common sense, really. |

Okay I'll be serious. If you want a good anime club, you have to get along with the other members. If the other otaku in your school aren't on the same wavelength there's nothing you can do. I have the same problem, hence the closet. Also, having a girl for president, or even having males and females in the same anime club is a recipe for club drama. When it comes to anime fandom, the gender gap is huge. |
Re: How does one lead an effective and fun anime club?

First thing... You have to have an activity... From what you posted it seems all you do is having a meeting and talk nonsense. Well, if that's all you do then don't expect anything fun. As for what activities you should have... I have no idea. I've never been in such clubs before. |

I haven't put a lot of concern about that. Raystorm, I think this anime club in your school has lots of ideas--- and it's all depends on the power of organising events and devotion to keep up the club spirit. |

"Also, having a girl for president, or even having males and females in the same anime club is a recipe for club drama. When it comes to anime fandom, the gender gap is huge" .... ANYWAY. from what I've gained from everyone so far, we need to get organized, and have them stay quiet, but the only problem about saying witty stuff is that after they laugh they have to come up with more witty things to say. I've tried that option before but thank you for your input. and I agree w00t0s, the anime club does have alot of ideas, but it needs organization. it's the most apparent thing we're lacking. I'm kind of in a rush right now to type this so please forgive my ignorance in putting up the CSS/HTML/w.e on my post but here was an attempt to get organized by the anime club by joining a myspace and giving people updates. http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=279585107 supposedly it was supposed to give people reminders and be a please to give feedback but I'm the only one who has done so =_=. and yeah like most anime clubs it's supposed to open up your world to anime but all it did was give a list of animes and tell you about vampire knights. I'm sure there are people in the anime club who are into that, but not everyone is...there should be more reccomendations. @angelus I totally agree, we should have some more 'less-otaku' people in our club. apparently the club goal is to open your horizons to new animes but naming off obscure animes that the general public doesn't know about or is even interested in kinda...eh... And though I've tried to garner interest in anime by showing people supposedly cool animes (known in the US) like Trigun, FLCL, Deathnote, (I could name Naruto but that almost always leads to narutards piping up and blabbing about everything naruto-related), etc, The officers shoot those animes down because it doesn't fit with their goal. as for activities, please list some, I would love to try out anything. if it works in your anime club, it's worth a shot in mine. well I didn't type this out to complain about it, sorry if it seems that way. I'm just being more detailed about our anime club. oh god, I just built a wall of text. sorry ^^"

Its pity to hear that mate :S But, quite frankly thats what you will get, you get the immature kids that ruin everything. Perhaps trying to explain how frustrating it is when people are talking out of turn, and try to explain that there has to be some kind of order versus chaos!! Thats cool you make your own mangas thats a good idea. And with extending the deadline and some of the other problems with the president, have you tried making friends with hte president and suggesting some things. Maybe she doesnt see the same problems with the club as you do, but maybe if you bring it to her attention. Try having like in a book club where you discuss recent anime watched, but have it like controlled where everyone gets to have a talk, maybe like an AA meeting lmao! Everyone in a circle and they tell about what they watched/read or whatever. You could even do a thing with music. And maybe occasionally you can have a free day where you bring in music or shows and eat popcorn and act crazy, so the poeple that cant contain themselves can let loose. As frustrating as that might be, it gives best of both worlds.

Re: How does one lead an effective and fun anime club?

OK, listen up: 1. Have a president who's good, and I mean really good, at promotion and public relations. If you're trying to 'open up new horizons' for other students, then you need a charismatic leader who can motivate and inspire people to check out anime. 2.Draw up a council which can decide matters after mutual discussion. Be professional with it; take the lead from the national legislature. 3. Set up a set of rules and regulations that are universally aplicable to all. Give everyone a set of goals to achieve. 4. Set up a system of reward and punishment. You don't know how important this is to members, who probably want appreciation for good work. 5. Identify the different types of members, and ensure that they're put in the appropriate department. For e.g., if you've got dominant and hyperactive members, put them to work popularizing the club's cause. 6. Diversity is very important in a club like this. Make sure you build up a diverse group of people who can contribute in different ways. 7. Divide the club into cells: a popularization cell, a member enrollment cell, a procurement cell, etc. Hope this helps. If it doesn't, I've got more ideas; just ask me! |

here was an attempt to get organized by the anime club by joining a myspace and giving people updates. Heh heh, don't forget to have their active e-mail addresses~! Seriously. I did once opened up a myspace page for my group during my class rep years. According to my experiences, roughly 50% would read the post. and yeah like most anime clubs it's supposed to open up your world to anime but all it did was give a list of animes and tell you about vampire knights. I'm sure there are people in the anime club who are into that, but not everyone is...there should be more reccomendations. How sad. Vampire Knights? What next, Naruto? Pfft. They should be encouraged to read anime magazines. Gant's words of wisdom~ true. I guess the activities can be simpler yet entertaining--- like club trip to animecons, picnics, cosplay parties, manga-making competitions, variety competitions, table quizzes, manga tutorials etc. |

@ schala zeal "Try being friends with the president" [redacted] OMG gant you are a genius!! T_T I wish I had more people like you in the club. Thank you, thank you, thank you very much for all the input everyone's giving me :D I knew I could count on you guys. now it's just a matter of putting these ideas to work.

Re: How does one lead an effective and fun anime club?

Gant do give out good suggestions ^^ . Well , here's more of mine :P : Try to get member who're specialize in certain field on anime . (e.g : Pro on Definiton/Info of Anime , Specialist on CG Design on Anime , Experience Maga Artist etc.) and assign them to the respective class (Anime , Manga , Games , Cosplay) Reinfore those rules if your Otaku-ish member do not behave . If it do not work , kicking them out is the only solution , or it might be troublesome to your club . An anime club should have an anime library on it's own too , consisting of mangas , drawing lessons book , anime dictonary etc. . It allows people to get to know anime much better and it's a good reference to your club as well ^^ . (Ordinary library usually won't have a section on anime) The rest is already mentioned by Gant , so that's it for now ^^ . List of known (succesful activites held by my tiny , anime club of mine :P) activities : Drawing contest CG contest Know your anime (quiz) Drawing manga tutorials/class CG tutorial/class (if you have PC in your club) All-anime discussion day Cosplay practice Cosplay clothing design Cosplay tutorials/class List of known (successful) events held : Cosplay Fashion Competiton Show Your Talent ! Manga , Anime , Mini Game & CG Contest Annual Speech on Anime Show Your Talent ! Winner's Gallery Exibition Annual Open Mass Tutorial On Drawing Anime / Manga And CG Design Field Trip (Random , planned by the pros in my club ..... me included XDD) There are more , but don't meet up with such success :P . Malaysia is still fresh when it comes to anime ^^ . I don't know if my club is still alive ..... well I didn't type this out to complain about it, sorry if it seems that way. I'm just being more detailed about our anime club. Nope , it's ok ^^ . oh god, I just built a wall of text. sorry ^^" Not as long as me XDD (careful , Angelus ~~~ Off Topic) @Aramis Also, having a girl for president, or even having males and females in the same anime club is a recipe for club drama. When it comes to anime fandom, the gender gap is huge. Girl president or boy don't make much of a difference , as long the president has the most experience in anime and knows how to lead a club . But I totally agree about the anime fandom , boys like anime more than girls . But recent studies said that anime fangirls are rising slowly . |

If your talking about effectiveness, maybe these suggestions are right. But if your talking about Fun, that depends on your compatability to other Members. If they like Vampire Night a lot and at the same time you dont like vampire night, then the Fun(yours and other's) is already cut into Half.. the first thing you should practice I think is to be as close as much to other members (and try to have a very very good realtionship w/ them).. (<---an advice from a closet and anti-social person >_<) |
Re: How does one lead an effective and fun anime club?

Well it's been way past due on my report about how things went. On my senior year, I became The President of the anime club. me being the total gamer I am, I decided to base our fundraisers off of something cheap and what at first seemed easy to pull off: videogame tournaments. as far as events go, here's what I did: I hosted a Super Smash Bros Brawl Tournament in a tiny classroom, asked (read: begged on my knees) teachers for thier projectors, and grabbed volunteers to help provide wiis. We charged $2.50 for entry fee, and over 68 people came <_____< (it was packed beyond belief. we also planned a Videogame night with most of the games being related to anime in some way, save for rock band. entry fee was $5, and another tournament was held inside our auditorium for a $2 entry fee. roughly the same amount of people came over, and we profited greatly *o* During our fall festival we had an arcade booth set up with one of the Naruto fighting games, Tekken 5, and touhou or something (the game belonged to a super hardcore gamer), brawl, etc. on the other side of our booth we also sold lumpia, and we profitted from both booths. members had a lot of fun volunteering and setting up, and a lot of people at school were excited about the events we hosted. We also hosted an Anime-Styled Cafe (titled Cat Cafe because the general public has no idea what Neko means -_-), serving tea, coffee, and various cakes and desserts for customers. everyone was dressed up all fancy-like, and we had awesome anime OSTs playing in the background (COURTESY OF GENDOU.COM, I LOVE YOU GUYS! XD). can't really call it cosplaying, but we did dress up the part of waiters/butlers/waitresses, with formalwear and all that. At some point we became Ouran-hostclub-esque, with 'employees' chatting with the various customers so that they wouldn't be bored while eating :P We had movie nights every couple of fridays, and at the beginning of the year I attempted a "how to draw: manga" sessions" but it scrapped after a couple of weeks because all we had for demonstration was a permanent marker and the overhead thingy. if we had a cam on the projector, it would have been easier to teach, but oh well. The next president chosen was a freshman (now a sophomore), and although she uses different tactics for fundraising, she's good at leading the group. so yeah. Gant, once again, thank you so much for your advice, it worked out perfectly. I even made commercials on youtube and spread em on myspace and facebook so people would take notice, and we made big bucks on our fundraisers cuz lots of people came!
