How much anime does it take to learn Japanese?
Link | by thebluekirby on 2008-06-06 19:51:36
There are people I've met who can speak fluently in Japanese JUST from watching subbed anime

I never got around to asking how much anime it took them to watch to become fluent in japanese...

so i'm wondering @_@;; do you have to watch like... 500 series of anime to start becoming fluent at Japaneses or what? @_@;

I agree, just take a class and enjoy anime without having to think so much while watching.

I guess it really depends on how you define fluency. Just from watching anime, it is possible to pick up common phrases and informal grammar, which will help when watching other anime and TV but less so when needing to actually use that Japanese in real life, where you will need to know the proper way to say things before addressing people informally. Most people who have "learned" Japanese from anime are laughable IMO. Yes, yes, you watch a ton of anime and then you think you can follow the exaggerated cartoon voices. Then you meet a real Japanese person and realize you can't understand anything unless they slow it down to kiddie speed/grammar for you. I mean really, imagine a foreigner learning English from watching Scooby Doo.

Just take some classes! It may be hard at first but given a few years of effort you will assuredly find yourself with a far deeper understanding of Japanese language and culture than any self-proclaimed Western 'otaku.'

I spent about 1.75 years taking 20-50 hours a week of fansubs/subbed animes and using several good books I found, I taught myself enough to speak/read/write at a conversational level. I started to learn it just because I was tired of waiting for the fansubs and it was easier to just watch the show straight away.

Just by watching anime it will be hard to learn cuz of its complicated sentences you will encounter from time to time.

The best way is by taking a romaji lyric (for people who are weak in kanji like me) and translate it. It works for me.

Also one more way is to get a tape from a japanese language center and listen to it..it is design for jlpt exam lvl.

Make sure you have the script in front of you if you are new to it so you can back track when you miss an entire sentence or can't catch up with the dialogue.

Then watch anime to see how much you have improve.

While people think that anime will teach you basic Japanese, it really does not. I assure you, nobody "learning Japanese" from anime can pass any level of the JLPT. I attempted to learn Japanese from anime once, and all it did was kill my grammar, limit my sentences, and cause me to butcher the language. If you want to learn Japanese, find a teacher.

(How do I know? Experience. This is my third year taking Japanese formally, so I would know.)

You should not count the animes, and wait until you can speak japanese (at least the basics).I study japanese at school, and even if i love animes, i cant say you can study much japanese from them. The basics like [good morning] or smth are right, but there are a lot of slangs in them.Thats a good thing if you recognize a word, but the grammar will be wrong, and probably the meaning of the sentence too.The 1st time I was just sitting on the lesson was like.."@_@ wtf.thats not how i heard in animes."
Thats y you should find a normal japanese teacher.

I watched 20 and more anime' when I get used to some basic Japanese phrases.
In order to learn more, I'm studying Japanese then compare it to how it is being
said in the anime'.

hmmmm id say no...

the only thing that annoys me and my friends here in japan are the ppl who act like anime characters when they speak japanese...like trying to do the chibi voices and everything.

i started off picking up japanese from anime like sailor moon, dragon ball, and Ranma1/2 when i was like 6. i got in to high school and had to start from complete scratch. the only thing i had right was Ohayou {good morning} and arigatou {thank you}... i have taken about 4 years of formal japanese classes and im still not fluent at all.. altho i can sit and watch a RAW naruto episode and kinda understand wat is going on for pickign out words here and there.

but to test your full potontial in japanese is to really go to japan. I did that this summer and lets say i was the top kid in japanese at my school (in america)... and I had to tell the people i was talkin to in japan to repeat them selfs 3 or 4 times and say it slowly. it was only a problem for me during my first week there... after the first week everything was fine.

some tips that were givin to me by my host family was to watch everything in japanese with out subtitles... listen to all kinds of japanese music and continue to take formal classes.

and one more thing, please excuse my spelling... japanese keyboards are complicated, and my grammer if it is messed up.. i think i have been here in japan too long and my english is starting to get all messed up.

Well, it's one thing if you're like Younha and started watching Japanese drama at a very young age, but trying to learn from anime is a totally different thing.
Although watching anime has helped me learn/remember a lot mroe vocabulary, I haven't actually picked up any new grammar or phrases or anything. Just take lessons, it's much faster and easier. =)
