Because the light from distant stars and glare doesnt create enough of a refraction of blue/violet light for our eyes to pick up. If we didnt have an atmosphere the sky would be dark at day as well.

Coz the sun is lighting the other side of Earth....? I dunno =P |

This question is actually known as Olbers' paradox. If you would assume that the age of the universe is finite (15 billion years according to conventional wisdom), then it could be that it's just that there's not enough time for light from every corner of the universe to reach us. |

So that would mean that the light from stars on the edge of the universe has been traveling in space from the time of the big bang and it still hasn't reached earth? Heh.. that is a LONG way to go, considering light travels in a vaccum at like 3 million m/s (Probably a bit less). Still, I wonder if light from all the stars in the universe could produce the intensity of light that would light up the night sky like our sun does in the daytime? |

Its more of a concentration problem. Stars release a set amount of energy per second, in the form of radition, heat, and most notable, light. the farther you go from a Star the area in which that energy takes up grows expontentionly. We are close enough to the Sun so that there is a high enough concentration of light to illuminate the sky during the day, yet far enough so that heat and radiation doesnt kill us. There is a great distance of space for even the closest star's light to reach that it wont produce light refaction at a visable level. Its like a light blub in a dark room, sure at any point in the room you can see the light, but the illumination of the room decreases with the distance from the light. Oh.. speed of light is 3 hundred million meters per second... roughly more commonly written as 300,000 km/s. The closest star is also 4.28 light years away, 270,600 AU (distance betweeen earth and sun) and the next one much further..there is a lot of space in space

i learn soemthing in science dunno if it was correct when u look at stars you are looking at it from hundreds of years away because it takes time for the light to reach earth from a star? and thz for a new topic cause everytime i look at this section i see the same post over and over its boring |
Re: Y is the sky dark at night...!!!! have fun...

yeah thats correct, by now some evil space monster could have devoured all other galaxies in existence, and we wouldn't know because we see them as they were hundreds or thousands of years ago. |

That also goes to show how long it would take for someone to get to the area around those stars, assuming a way to travel at the speed of light came about. BTW, my bad about the speed of light estimate. |

You can never travel at the speed of light. period. Even if this is a hypothetical question, you should realize someting aboUT Einsten's Special Theory of Relativity. That would require infinite amount of energy. Done ranting. |
Re: Y is the sky dark at night...!!!! have fun...

I think it's not infinite. It's ALMOST infinite cuz the equations are too big. So the speed of light isn't impossible. And... Yeah, Sammi's right. The sky is dark at night cuz the sun is on the other side of the earth. It's bright at day cuz the atmosphere refract the sunlight to create different colors at the sky. From what I heard, the starlight is emitted from the burning stars. And after that... POOF! The stars are destroyed! But we always see them shine every night! So... How much exactly is the stars in the universe? Is it infinite? Maybe we should think about using that infinite energy!

ummmm it is infinite... when a particles velocity hits the speed of light the equation of special relativty hits 1 over 0.. which is infinte.. its a very simple equation.. 1 over the square root of 1 minus the velocity squared over the speed of light squared.. very simple, very small

That's easy. Because Ranger takes the batteries out of the sun each night an puts them in the moon. ![]() |
