To be a true leader
|
What are the qualities of a leader? are leaders born or made? what is your own definition of a leader, and are you kind of person that wants to take charge or follow the leader? I do have my own ideas but I'd like to hear yours first.

Leaders 'earn' their leadership. Unless the leader is strong, he won't have followers. Err...the leader carry out THE purpose of his group, and obviously his followers help him in every step. So, it's not necessary that only the followers follow orders and feed their leader. The leader has a job too! |
Re: To be a true leader

I think that in this world, you can't avoid the leader-follower type of relationship because not everyone can be leaders nor followers. There has to be a leader in order to command, although a good leader must not enforce something clearly for his own benefit. The followers must also be allowed to exercise their freedom of speech. Leaders are not born, they're made. You may say that they're born leaders because they know how to guide others in fulfilling their duties etc. but they become like that because they're honed the same way. I also think that leaders, the good ones, have this special charm with regards to authority. I for one, don't care about the leader-follower type of relationship. I do things because i need to and because it interests me. :P

Qualities of a leader: Justice, honesty, humility, and above all a sense of duty towards his subordinates. Leaders are definitely made! The appropriate environment, proper moral education, even the parents' personalities go into formation. I wanna be a leader, but I'm kinda short on the humility part so...^_^ |

A leader can never be natural-born, it's always made. Because a person needs to be influenced by other people who has the 'typical' characteristics of a leader and the leadership styles. He/she learns from that supposed leader, hence practice that skill to be a possible unique leader for the benefit of a group, or even for him/herself. And to know the leader is the 'true' leader, it's up to the followers and the leader him/herself to satisfy the group environment they are in. |
Re: To be a true leader

I disagree that leaders 'have' to earn their leadership. in a group where everyone is equal and have a common goal (ie a poster project) one person will undoubtedly be more influential and motivating than the rest. Good leaders must also be good followers. how will they learn if they cannot follow THEIR superior? They must know what it is like to be in both positions. I'd write more but CST's are tomorrow -_-" btw I brought up this subject because I'm being promoted to C/E-4 in a couple of months in NSCC

The qualities of a leader lead him to that superior position. The followers agree to follow an individual. The leader gets the vote from the majority who thinks he's competent enough for the job. So, he's obviously earned that leadership. Besides, a leader is not born. He used to be a follower before he became a leader. |
Re: To be a true leader

A leader must also be responsible and be able to learn from his mistakes and be able to take the blame. I was watching Hells Kitchen and the black guy who became the captain of the male team took a "hands off" approach. He blamed other members for incompetence when he couldnt take charge.

"Are leaders born or made?" In my own point of view, leaders are rather made, not born. He himself follows first before he leads, and along the way, he is either molded to become a leader, or learns how to become a leader by his sole experience. In my own definition of a leader, a leader should be both a disciplinarian and a comrade. He should be able to keep his subordinates in line and at the same time be someone who can be approachable at times. He should also be a man (or a woman) who can take responsibility for all his actions. Nah, Id rather follow a leader. I like the power that comes with being a leader, but I don't like the responsibilities that come with it...

I'm the kind of guy who lets others lead then takes over if they're doing a crappy job. I need to change that so that I should want to lead first.

Leaders are born. They take responsibility and think before they act..usually. But you are your own leader because no one can lead your life better than yourself. No, I happen to dislike taking leadership roles.
So I drove into a parking lot one time and saw this person pull into a handicap parking spot. When you think handicap, you think wheelchair and whatever, right? So it just ticked me off when I saw the guy come out of the car perfectly fine. So then I ran him over.

@ emphy: ROFL I'm glad you like my way of thinking and I kinda notice that many do not like the leadership role because if all goes down, they're likely to be blamed for it. then again, the weak tend to point fingers. responsibility. scary word, isn't it? I'd like to conquer my fear of it some day ^^

to be a leader mostly is to be able to speak up within your group. if you arent comfortable with the public, at least you can lead your group well, that's fine. you may not be a big leader or something, but still, you can take charge of what's around you, which is fine. i believe everyone's a leader of some sort. but to be a true leader, you have to have great responsibilities, which doesnt come with everyone. |
Re: To be a true leader

I think this is interesting, that there is a whole class of people who have so much charisma that they can inspire people with it even if they have no other extraordinary qualities. now here's a controversial topic for you. This man rose from a failure of an artist to starting a global war. do you think hitler was a good leader? Dun dun dun...(yea I'm serious)

Hitler was an exemplary leader, his accomplishments politically, socially, economically, and militarily, were far reaching and profound, definitely one of the best leaders of the 20th century |
Re: To be a true leader

ah, one of the most effective leaders. truly controversial. we had this discussion in my NSCC class and we were hesitant to mention him. Even though he is an effective leader, he is not one of moral value. rocketg, you've got a sharp mind ^^

the first and most important quality of a great leader is integrity (incorruptibility, honesty), witout this a leader will fail. I think second is decisiveness, good judgement and good decision making. Bad decisions will lose the respect of the followers and lead to failure. They must also be able to instill confidence, motivate, and must be wise to know when to take risks and when not to. The average tenure of a CEO is around 5 years. That shows how few good leaders that there are. Wisdom and knowledge are learned. I'm more of the ronin type, I don't need to follow and don't have the time to lead. |

A leader is someone who has no choice but to sacrifice a lot of his or her enjoyment, for lack of a better word, for the greater good; how a leader would be willing to give so much should come from love--or amibition. Or both, I suppose. Protecting the people you're left in charge of is also a huge responsibility, and most often than not, you'd be putting your reputation on the line if you're dealing with the wrong sort of people. xD I guess, you need to believe in it enough to put everything on the line, until you kill the thing you love before it kills you. Kinda depressing, but it's not all glamorous.
