Anime'---------No Social Relevance!!!!
|
Hi guys!! Since I didn't suceed in the first thread I made which is just a repitition of an existing thread, I have another question here! Well, sorry for repeting a thread! Here's my question- Do you agree that anime' has no social relevance? Social relevance means importance in everyday interaction of human beings! This question is formulated in my mind since my classmate, a Philosophy minor, said that she can't understand why the anime' organization in our school seems to be so happy while chatting and sharing anime' stuffs. Then she told me that anime' realy doesn't have a social relevance, not helpful in any way! But then we're not here to personally critique my classmate, just try to give an opinion to the topic of anime's social relevance! What do you think about this? Make sure to post a reply after you read this, just collecting opinion for a paper! Arigatou Gosaimasu! |

Humm good question... i don't think it has any social relevance at all in most cases. if most anime did have a social relevance then i think that perhaps it would be less interesting to watch, the main reason i like anime is because it portrays fantasy worlds that are completely off the hook compared to western fantasies ^^ Some may argue that it has no relevance to western society, but that it has some relevance to Japanese society. If they are talking about the way that people interact then they are WRONG. I've read that Hardcore Otaku in Japan sometimes use anime as their base to interact with other people, copying behaviours that anime characters would have for example. It doesn't work and is probably what contributes most to a hardcore otaku's weirdness... HOWEVER There are some anime that try to give off political and social messages, as is expected in any sort of film/television industry. I think perhaps these sort of attempts are made mainly in films than series. A good example would be Jin Roh (film), which was a protest against the fascist tendencies of the Japanese government at the time. Although it was of course a science fiction (The axis were depicted to have won the second world war) it was still relevant to reality, check wikipedia for a good article on jin roh: wolf brigade. Also Princess Mononoke was trying to portray a message about man's struggle against nature, and that we should embrace nature rather than exploit and destroy it. But overall, i think perhaps anime tries less hard to indoctrinate the watchers. I may be a bit critical here, but it makes me cringe when i see western shows try to portray "deep" messages as to how we should behave in films, or the blatantly obvious messages in kids cartoons ("it doesn't matter what colour we are, we can all get along" quote from Super Mario). Although sometimes these messages may be good it worries me that the media can influence most people so much... i think i may have wandered off the point, and i'm not even sure if i answered your question haha ^^
The Chobits Effect - the feeling of happiness and fulfillment that can be felt while watching or just after watching a kick ass anime XD

To Traumend: Hehe, thanks for posting your opinion, I really like it! Don't worry, it answered the question. Well you really got a good point! In Japan, anime' really has a great impact on their film industry and it also has a portration of their culture and politics. Just to describe anime' here in the Philippines- It is really becoming popular especially for the kids, since older people treat anime' as kid's stuff only. So, THEY (others) think that anime' has nothing to do with their lives. Yeah, I understand them since anime' is Japan's creation and art. For Filipinos out there-You can relate to me, right? Correct me if I'm wrong! For me,answering my own question, it really has a relevance especially when it comes to my interaction with my friends, and it also teach us good lessons in life. |

Every show, anime or otherwise, has some kind of impact of society. As far as anime goes for me, it teaches some good leasons. Mostly its about protecting precious people, honor, stuff like that. The idealism in Ghost in the Shell could very well pave the way for society when the world does become cyberized. Anime has an impressive knack of changing one's perspective and opinion about something. Appleseed (an average movie for me) showed that a utopia is certainly possible. However, the technological requirements and social setting make Appleseed's utopia impossible. Anime is still gaining momentum in American society. Most people have heard of it at least. Its still a little early to ask these kinds of questions, but I do think it will have a substantial impact. |

Are you insane???? Anime is full of social relevance. It reflects the parent society's beliefs and prejudices, besides revealing several facets of human nature that go into the construction of entire societies. Besides, your friend is a philosophy minor, isn't she? Tell her to read the manga version of Appleseed. She'll find more philosophy in there than all the stuffy books she'll ever read, that's a promise! |

Look, sorry if it came out wrong, but I don't intend to critique anyone. I just hate it when people criticize things they don't understand. It's better to look first and talk later. |
