Wormholes

From what I understand about them after skimming through a book on black holes out of boredom, they somehow can transport you into other locations. but the book (I can't even remember the name,-_-) says that wormholes are so fragile that if one were to go near it it would collapse. huh? If you don't made, could someone verify this? and provide any additional information about wormholes as well?
