Writer's block
|
|
Okay, anyone here who's a true poet or writer probably knows how much torture writer's block is, especially when you have something really, really good to write, but you just can't get it out! So, I just want to know: Does anyone have any really good remedies for writer's block? |

I DO SINCERELY HATE WRITER'S BLOCK!!! X( And I am having it for quite long now! When will I continue writing my Death Note fanfiction?!? *shakes fist in air* My ways of unblocking the block is to think few (possible) plots before writing them down. [It is vital that a writer should give him/herself time to decide and getting rid of writer's block (ohohoo, I am serious, getting rid of writer's block is not a quick process)]. That way I can compare which plot(s) suits best in the story. Even if I can't write them down (I know myself that I am a cautious slow thinker), although already know what the plot(s) gonna be, I just keep them in my head, keep on (or start) thinking while observing what's around me to be inspired (at least!!!! >_>) It works for me. Are you writing a fanfiction? Just asking ^^ |

Okay, I guess I can try something like that. Actually, I'm mostly a poet. Whenever I start a fanfic or any kind of story or book idea, I only get so far before I just stop. I started a Naruto fanfic last year, and I recently decided to continue with it because I've been plagued with writer's block for so long keeping me from writing any poetry. I may actually finish this one, and I'm probably going to try and finish the Rurouni Kenshin fanfic I started two years ago, lol. Yes, I am the master of procrastination. But really, I have plenty in my head that I could turn into good poetry, but nothing is coming out. Just a little while ago, I ws able to get the first stanza in a sonnet out, but now I just have an incomplete poem. |

^_^; Well, I'm not much of a writer, but For artist's block, I like to listen to my favorite songs and check out fanarts on Theotaku and Deviantart. I guess they inspire me. But for writer's block, I'd say Listen to a lot of music. Like, even if it's a song you don't especially like, the lyrics might help you brainstorm. You know, like help shape your tecnique. But hey, this is coming from the artist, not writer so this might sound different. >.<; -Quack-

Hey, I used to be an artist too, and you're right: music helps! But I guess I'm in a different kind of depression state, because nothing is helping. I'm constantly listening to music, and everytime I hear or think of anything that would be a good line in a poem, I go crazy trying to think of anything else I can put to make it into a poem. Usually, I just need to be depressed and have something to write about and I can write poetry that everyone thinks is so great (I think it could be better), but I have both those things and nothing's coming out! |

I think poetry is unlike fanfiction (or whatever narrative stories). It's up to the poet like you to end the poem~ even if you can't think of a line that is supposed to rhyme, the main point is you can just construct a sort of imagery that later you can fit it into a sentence for the next stanza. Poetry is more conceptual and abstract, I should say. If you can't end in a full sonnet form, well, end it your way. ^^ Ooh, anything from last year's (or even two years or more ago) fanfiction, I won't continue XD It's true! I would just leave them abandoned (woo, so sad... what such waste of paper). There's no point of continuing something that you don't have that feeling and less knowledge on the subject in you anymore. Learning from that, I need to put more focus and keep it in my mind often for not forgetting the whole point of the story completely. I guess you need to put lots of focus into the subject you find interesting. Just ONE subject at a time. When you think only one, obviously, you will only think things that relate to that (backed up with music that you find appropriate for the storywriting). And try string up into some sort of an image, or even possible, a short clip in your mind. And once begin to write, think of simple words--- then relate it to the image you imagined on the subject. Hopefully you might think up another better words to narrate the draft plot. Way better if you record your ideas and composed phrases in a notebook, just to make sure you ain't forget anything. Keep on thinking, writing... stop if your brain is a bit fried, take breaks (good time to get inspiration and also related things). !!! Please do not endanger yourself being depressed for the sake of your literary work! It simply demotivates you in some way, hence writer's block again! Just use specific music--- pwease~~~!!! |

Okay, I think your advice will help. I'll try some of it. Oh, and don't worry about me endangering myself for the sake of my work. It happens wether I write anything or not, so I may as well get soemthing out of it.^^ Writing doesn't really make it better, but at least I have something that people think is good afterwards. Oh yeah, if you'd like to read any, I have them all here: http://Writing.Com/authors/yaminokokoro I also have the only short story I've ever finished (besides narrative essays I had to do in school. They were good, though) in there. It's a good place for writers if you'd like to join, even if all you write is fanfics! |

My main remedy is music. Depending on the mood of the story determines the type of music I like to listen to while I write it. One way to avoid writer's block (and you've probably heard of this) is to carry around a notebook everywhere you go and when an idea pops into you head (whether you think it will go anywhere or not doesn't matter), write it down. Also write quotes or phrases that catch your attention in the notebook as well. That way, over time you will have lots to write about as you look back at it. I've only been doing this recently and i haven't written much down in it. Otherwise, I would recommend doing something you enjoy or just doing something else and think about the story and possible directions. For example, I actually like to think about story ideas while I am mowing lawn or washing dishes at home. It can be relaxing at times and you don't need a whole lot of attention to do those tasks (with exceptions). Anyways, that would be my advice. |

well,Yami. It seems you have had this problem for a small while, no? I say just put it off to the side for a little maybe a week/school week[5 days]. Now I never said give up! All I'm saying is to take a break and hopefully, your ideas will once again flourish~ I mean I do it all the time! I take a break from drawing and get back to it and...Shabang! It seems like my talents are re-absorbed into me^^but note: Dun push it outta the way too long or your talent will suffer~Just hold it off for a small while. never give up! -quack-

Yami, I checked your account in Writing.Com and your literary works are beautiful! I love your poems, beautifully composed yet simple narration (which is very good--- your narrative skills bring strong imagery in the poems), especially 'Why is Love red?'. Brilliant. Aah, I read your story (Red Rose) too. It's like reading fairy tales... but somehow you have already outlined the opening and the ending story--- that's definitely won't put you into writer's block--- I find the story interesting, I would say you could rewrite the story (just my suggestion, you don't have to do it)--- only more novel-like (fairy tales, legends etc is too sudden, in my opinion >_>). All you can do now is create plots to bring the legend alive. ^^ |

Oh, thank you.*blush* It still surprises me when people say stuff like that about my poetry. I didn't even know I could do poetry at all until last year in nineth grade. That's also when I wrote most of those, but I didn't join writing.com until a year later, so the date it's uploaded isn't the date it was written. Anyway, yeah, "Red Rose" was actually just something I had come up with for a character when I was stil writing manga. She was just a secondary character, and that was just a legend she had found and she liked it a lot. It has a lot of significance with her. It actually gives her this idea of how to protect her best friend from heart break. If any boy ws interested in her friend, he had to prick his finger on the thorn of a white rose and let the blood drip on it. Only one boy was willing to do it, and he turned out to be her friend's soulmate (I'd have to explain the whole story for you to really understand what I mean). Anyway, when I stopped drawing, I had to give up on those stories because they just weren't right for regular books, but I wanted to keep the legend. One thing it has in common with "Why is love red?" is that they were actually inspired by the cards in "Alice in Wonderland" when they were painting the roses red. Of course, the feelings I had about weren't so silly and happy. Oh yeah! Can you tell me which one you thought was the best?! I need to enter a poem in a contest and I can't use "Why is love red?" because I entered it in a previous contest or "Season of Snow" beause I think it has over 24 lines. Thank you again! |

I think according to my experiences, never do two things at once--- always write the story first. Once that's done, draw the manga ^^ A contest... I wish "Season of Snow" is allowed for the poetry contest! It shows a lovely, gentle imagery, the narrative is simply effective--- gives a fine, festive, memorable kind of feeling ^_^ (The final four stanzas... absolutely beautiful <3 ) I don't think the poems you have at the moment are appropriate enough for the competition. I am not saying your poetry is not good, it's always great, you mastered on simple narration to give a strong vivid imagery ^^ Better compose a new poem on something light and warm... away from the depression state for a while. Like... full moon? See its graceful form that can be metaphorise into a living, mysterious figure... I am just suggesting. Cuz you know the judges involved will not favour many sad poems... just keep that in mind. Aah, that does came from Alice in Wonderland! :D |

Okay, I see what you mean. The other day I actually got an idea for a sonnet, but I only have 6 lines done. I'm trying to get it finished, but....anyway, here's what I have: When all is lost When all is lost, do I reach out for more? Do I grasp on to anything that's near, And hold fast to it like a paramour? Never letting go, out of love and fear. When all is lost, should I instead retreat, And lock my heart away, forever safe? |

In this case, you just have to wish that your inspiration struck you more often. Not only music and art, watching movies, having recent experiences over things like (no matter how crazy it sounds) sickness, heart-break, new friends etc can give you new things to write about. And poetry comes from the heart and it is what your heart is going through, isn't it? So, good luck. ;D |

I always get writer's block. Usually I think it over for a week or do massive brainstorming. I listen to music or watch TV to give me themes to write on. That helps me. |

I don't even need tv to write! New things keep happening to me and well, they are crazy! XD |

I think it's just a phase every write or artist goes through. But I do know what it's like, I have some great ideas I want t owrite about but I do'nt feel like writing it. Or I really want to write but I cna't get any ideas! If writing is anything like doing art(I think it is) then it's just a phase. We'll go into it, then out of it, but then we'll get right back into it again. It happens. To help, sometimes, just writing whatever comes to mind might give yourself some inspiration. Or the usual listening to music, watchings ome t.v., or go do some of your other hobbies and not think about writing for a while. Then it'll all just come back to you.
