printer sharing
Link | by on 2008-01-27 06:47:59
I have a HP Deskjet 3840(connected to a desktop pc), and I already set it up to share the printer, my problem is that the second computer(laptop) cannot access to the printer. whenever I add a printer and click browse I get a error message "Windows cannot connect to the printer. Either the name of the printer has been typed in incorrectly or the printer has lost connection with the server."

what should I do?

Thanks. I hope someone can help me.

Is your desktop computer on ?
If it is; do you have any firewall on ?

yes my pc is on...
The problem is that my laptop cannot browse for the connection(printer) because whenever I click browse and put the printer's name and then click next the error message always appears.

What kind of error message? mind showing a print screen.

Also, I'd like to know if you had printer sharing on from the host PC?

I'm confused...

anyways can somebody just give me a step by step process on how to share my printer. I'll just start from the beginning, maybe I skip some procedure/steps for printer sharing. that's why the problem occur.

The printer is installed in my desktop pc and I want the printer to be shared with my laptop. I'm connected to my pc using a wireless connection, if i'm not mistaken it's through what they call wifi.

Another question is, after the process(printer sharing) can my laptop automatically print documents using the printer connected in my desktop pc? (trough wifi)or printer sharing is just a way to avoid the hassle in transferring data from my laptop to my pc using usb?

thanks.

It's both...

also, it'll be hard to help. In order for us to help you, you need to help us, by telling us what kind of OS you're using, and what kind of router you're using.

Okay, the only problems with having a printer hooked up to one computer and sharing it is that the computer must be on whenever something needs to be printed. The reason is that the computer acts like a "server" or "bridge."

That's the first step.

Second, any firewalls must allow Network Traffic, whether it be your end or the printer computer, they both need to be configured to accept the Print Spooler and Network related traffic, mainly the 192.168.xx.xxx IP addresses.

Third, both computers (or others) must be on the same workgroup. Right click my computer on the desktop and select properties and it should pop up your system information. If not, then right click My Computer in the Start Menu.

Fourth, make sure your printer has sharing enabled on that computer.

Finally, on your computer (not the printer one), look through your network by going to start > network. Your computer should now start looking for networked devices in your workgroup. The computer with the printer should then show up. Click on it and it'll go into it and show a list of folders and shared drives and stuff. It'll also have the printer folder.

I'm pretty sure you know the rest, right click the printer and default it.

---
For router settings,

If you never touched your Linksys even for setting up a security setting, then no configuration is needed. Although it is good to check a few things like having UPnP devices enabled and all other things checked except for the IDENT Port 113.

They should be checked by default.
