Consciousness and Self-Consciousness

Is there a subtle difference between these two? Consciousness referring to be aware of something; for instance, to be conscious of something or someone. And self-consciousness; to be aware of the imminence of oneself; of one's existence. Aren't they actually, similar in that sense? I'm stumped.

Consciousness is being aware of things in general.
Self-consciousness is being keenly aware of your own behavior, appearance, and how other people perceive you.
