Hey can anyone tell me what's wrong with my computer? My hard disk reached 0kb free space for no reason. I tried deleting some unnecessary files which i think is more than 1mb but after a few minutes it became 0kb free space again >_<. and I can't defragment my files. it stopped automatically. do i really need to reformat my hard disk? |

Try to run Disk Cleanup. Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools then open Disk Cleanup. Or you can try using some Cleaning Programs to remove other unnecessary files. See Nice Cleaning Program thread. |

I don't know the problem of your hard disk if I didn't see it personally. But there are some things that it will be helpful. It is possible that you're hard disk is infected by a virus or worm named "Hard Disk Filler Virus" (It's only the generic name of that virus, but there are 5 kinds of those things, 3 worms and 2 virus form). I just encountered those and makes your hard disk to fill unnecessary files until it turns to 0 bytes free space or make your disk clusters into BAD SECTOR. But I'm not sure about your problems causes, because there are many possiblility that makes your problem. But if you want, try those possibilities. 1. Check your Temporary Internet Files located in your User's Directory (example: C:Documents and SettingsDefault UserLocal SettingsTemporary Internet Files). Make sure that your folder option can show all hidden files and folders. After that, check what files in there are bigger or eat lots of hard disk space. (Although, those files are temporary files or sometimes unnecessary. So it can be deleted or not. It's your own decision if you will delete those or not). 2. Go to your Windows Folder. You see some folder names like $NtUninstall..., (example: $NtUninstallKB885836$, $NtUninstallKB913580$.) that was written in blue font. Those are the uninstall folders for updates installed on the computer. If space is a consideration you can delete the older ones after enough time has passed that you're sure you won't want to uninstall them. When you do, also delete the associated KB885836.log file. I generally delete them after two months. 3. Manually find the largest capacity files in your Hard disk. If you find that file, kindly say the name, type, and folder location of that file. I will need some information to deal with it and search other possible cure in your problem. 4. Scan your PC againts Virus and Worms, if your PC detects something malicious file, find that file and delete it in your hard disk manually using DOS MODE. If the scanner detects WORMS, it is recommended to reformat your Hard disk. NOTE: Reply on this post for more updates in your problem so we can help you. OK! But if you do 1 and 2 options, wait for 30 to 60 minutes while you're doing something in your PC (you can play games or surf the internet while observing what's going on in your PC, "RECOMMENDED") and check your hard disk free space. Reply also the results. |

You could also try using Check Disk or a defrag. I get this error in my old PC once in a while and doing a Check Disk (with both options selected) generally did the trick... |

I too had such problem. As appeared - put in my old AntiVirus. It's reports exceeded 4Gb! And constantly grew. Probably you have program which makes something similar. |

@ ruy lopez well...to be honest i don't really know what to do. 1. i deleted ALL the things in the temporary internet folder...i don't know whether it was wise to do that or otherwise DX 2. i see some folders with blue font but i don't know how to delete them because all are very important...and there is a DAT file which i don't know what to do with it. 3. sorry again but how can i do that? i know i'm dumb >_< 4. i scanned using AVG but it appears to have no virus or worms...i think it's weird @bloodymoon actually now i can't even run defragmenter, check disk and some other programs. says they could not start >_< ok...before i can't even defragment the disk, i tried many times. the disk space keep changing after i've done the defragmenting process until it becomes zero. and i see lots of fragmented files which are labelled red. well what i observed while operating the computer - the pop-up which tell me the critical space of the hard disk keeps coming of course. and..the computer froze for a few seconds frequently. i can't even operate defragmenter and some other programs now so i don't know what can i do.>_< |

For Kira: 1. If you delete all the Temporary Internet Files, how many Capacity that your hard disk become? If your capacity is in 0KB again in few minutes (did I said you must observe your free space before and after you delete a file?), find a file that is more than 2-5GB in your hard disk and say it to this forum. Sometimes the extension that I'm saying was .DAT, .DLL, .???, or .BAT. Did you observe your hard disk space after you delete the files in your Temporary Internet Files? 2. The BLUE Font Folders are some uninstall files that was created after you uninstall a program (Updates, OS Patch & Updates, Softwares, Drivers, etc). Sometimes it is important if you will reinstall the program you just uninstall. And sometimes it is useless if you don't want to reinstall the program you just uninstall. If you want, delete only the $NtUninstall... that was 2 Months old and up. You can detect the CREATED-TIME of that file by Right Clicking the File and Choose Properties. As you choose properties, there is a label indicating the "Created Date" of the file. Just delete the OLD ones, not the NEW ones. And delete also the corresponding KB....txt Files after you delete the OLD blue font folder. 3. There is no DUMB people in this world because everyone of us have brains to fill in. Just observe. You will learn something while observing. But sometimes, if you do risky things, you will also learn some important lessons. 4. As you said in your new post, you scan your PC with AVG. But sometimes AVG is not accurate enough. AVG Anti-Virus cannot scan and detect WORMS. It can only detects Virus, Trojans, and Spyware. If you have any System Scanner that can detect all-known-WORMs in your PC, install it before it's too late. But be sure you UPDATE it first before using it because if it's not updated, it can't detect any new WORMS due to it's WORM signature incompatibility. NOTE: Computer WORMS is not the same as Computer VIRUS. WORMS is more dangerous than VIRUS. And you just said to bloodymoon that you defrag your hard disk many times, after that you can't defrag ytour hard disk now. And the label RED Files was came out. Those files are Undefrag, Incomplete Defrag or Defraged files and those are created when a program was RUNNING while you are DREFRAGING your hard disk. It is recomemned to shut all running prgrams before you defrag. If you don't do that, that RED Files or Folders will appear, or even worst, it can corrupt your OS System Files and make your OS can't work properly or will not work at all (like what I did 5 years ago from this day). The pop-up is only warning that your hard disk is on its low capacity and sometimes slows ytour computer because your Hard Disk is FULL. If you can't operate or execute some programs at all, do 1, 2, and 4 list that I have said to you. But if you're in a hurry to illiminate all errors and bugs in your PC, well, pack all important files of yours and FORMAT your hard disk and then reinstall your Operating System. |

kira: it could be that you actually got to the end of the HDD... you know? they say on the box or someplace that the HDD is good for X amount of writes and rewrites.. like a DVD-RW... course that really shouldn't happen at all... I've actually never heard of that happening lol personally these guys are saying good suggestions... if none of those ideas work... you could always just go the CST(computer service tech) way out... go out to the store and buy a new one... then copy everything over... (this also can tell you if its a virus or something... if the drive had your OS on it, and its doing the same thing) ... |
