Is Talent Needed to be Creative?
Link | by on 2007-10-13 11:43:22 (edited 2007-10-13 11:49:30)
Discussion in College:

Person 1: Talent is need to be creative.

Me: OR maybe we all are creative, it is just that we tend to deny any ideas we have because we think it's not good.

Person 2: Oh heck! Look at him trying to bring philosophy into this!

Person 1: Yeah, I guess I can agree to that. I guess sometimes I even reject my ideas cause I think it's stupid.

Person 3: You know, I like a tornado lava lamp.

Person 2: Now that's stupid.

Me: Hey, stupid ideas that work are called ingenious

Person 1: See, now there's a man that spits out anything stupid. I can see him in the future being rich because he invented something stupid.

So there's my view of this.

This is a really, really hard-to-talk-about topic. I'm not gonna lie.

Talent is not needed to be creative. Creativity is basically just an urge to do something different. Whether it's considered 'good' or 'bad' is decided by other people.

Creativity isn't always a mark of talent. The most successful are talented AND have creativity because their works are 'good' AND stand out, but there are millions of people out there whose works are 'good' but have no origininality or whose works are creative but are not 'good'.

Hmm, interesting argument. A philosophical person speaks in ingenious terms. Now that's definitely screw my brains tonight XD
I guess creativity develops a talent, but can't create a talent. Everyone has talents, from being the fastest hot-dog eater to the best actor in the world. A talent is a thing with action that everyone possesses, and it's up to the person to cultivate that talent. One talent is not enough. A talent involves with taking action. I consider multi-tasking a talent, not just a skill. You know what I mean? The reason why we need to discourage ourselves a little when it comes to agreeing which idea(s) is/are the best cuz we need to be a little polite though, you know, not to let others have this bad impression on someone (like implying he/she is a bragger, a know-it-all, a control-freak, and so on)

I think talent is needed. Myself having no talent, it sucks. Cuz while I have great ideas for things like AMV's and other things that are creative becuase I also have no talent for those things it harder and they will proably never turn out as good as other peoples work.

@darkstranger- yeah, of course we need at least a talent or two to make ourselves skillful. But that somehow sounds like a bit 'attention-seeking' though. You can't expect yourself to be talented at everything! Just be talented from what you love! You said you are very good at making AMVs, so why bother work your way into something that's out of your interests? And it's up to your dedication to start something new to make yourself more talented than ever. To prefer somebody else's works is not a bad thing, we are encouraged to appreciate others from the day we were a growing child... but you gotta be confident in your work too. Give yourself a chance to improve your skills. A talent won't die if you keep it up.

Darkstranger, you just proved my point by saying you suck XD. You reject your own thoughts and thus reject any ideas that may seem stupid to you but ingenious to others.

A personal experience was in my IB English class, we were annotating Martin Luther King Jr's "I Have a Dream!" speech. One part I noticed in the speech was this long chain (considerably a run-on). In my head, I connected this long long long long chain of sentences as a theme of time of how long the civil rights movements went on and on.
I thought that idea was dumb/stupid/idiotic;
However, when I told my teacher about it, she was, "OMG WOW! Why did you say this in class?! Wow!"

It doesn't hurt to spill it out you know. One persons "supposed" stupidity can also be another person's wisdom.

@skyL- Maybe stupidity is a valuable input!!! XD

I guess a talent is necessary because one of the reasons are it can lead into a potential opportunity. Surely we need to make use of our talent(s) but never wrongly use them. It's so wrong to commmit a bad thing with our talent(s) we believe so great.

Creativity is what you need the most. Talent simply boosts it. But even In the end it depends on our own initiative to take action and make use of those blessings. If you don't have the guts to present your ideas to the public, then creativity or talents mean nothing. You might never realize your own talents if you never tried to do anything because you're afraid if other people dislike it.

So, be shameless XD
It might change your life...

@sai- Hahaa, I forgot the importance of creativity in this discussion! XD Well, yeah, of course creativity is important. We need our own signature when it comes to showing our originality. But I don't think talent boosts one's potential. It's creativity that develops a talent, then boosts the person's potential to show the talent he/she has. A talent is a higher form of skill, in my opinion. So yeah, you are right, creativity is what a person need most.

@Woots. No I'm not trying to get attetion. And sadly I never said I was good at making AMVs, I said I have good ideas but so far I have yet to complete one.

@SkyL I never said I suck. I just said it sucks not having talent at anything. And I know how that feels.

while talent and creativity would most likely have a positive correlation if an objective study was made, i wouldn't say one necessarily would need one to have the other

@darkstranger- Apologies if I was being misunderstood, I didn't mean to hurt your feelings there! If I was, kick my ass right now XD lol That happens a lot to me, when I got ideas, then the problem will be when to put those ideas into place ¬_¬ Hey, you still gotta believe you are good at making AMVs, although yours may not be the standard of other AMV makers, but heck, you know you are always learning something new to improve your AMV-making skills. That's how to love a talent and make full use of it. For the sake of hobby or ambition.

@rocketg- 0_0 you mean like one thing needs no other? Erm... that'll be like a natural talent. Where a person simply can do with less or no effort. But we can't be illusionised by 'natural' talent, since everyone needs to learn something to acquire skills, encouraging creative thinking and improve one's talents for living.

hmm.. i think we can do anything we want just by practicing more. A person have different kind of talent maybe because they were gifted and was born to be on that kind of things they want to, and already have decided for their future.
Being creative is just depend on us if we want to or not, everyone is unique so it may seem like some say they don't know and can't do that it just because they don't want to do it. we can create our own things, we can use our imagination to help ourself be more creative and change things.

or is it just luck? we want to do it or not, its up to us.

@sakura- come on now, you gotta believe you are talented. You make it sound like talent must be shown to the crowd, no matter what. Talent can be displayed if wished to do so. Creativity is the booster, so it should have a great effect on your talent(s).

@miko- I agree. ^_^ By luck, hmm, maybe, but as you know, it always takes a lot of effort to think creatively and be as creative as possible to develop talents, luck or no luck.

For me 99% of creativity comes from efforts, talent only 1%.
So I try to practice more and more.

creativity is the way we solve problems. it express the way you think and it may different or not. but, some people rejects their creativity and some people doesn't have any talent to express their creativity.
well, talent has no relation with creativity. talented people may not creative and creative people may not talented. but, sometimes we do need talent to apply ideas (creativity) in out mind.. well, but courage is the most important thing needed to express your creativity, talent will be the second or third...

in the name of truth and honor, i shall have my vengeance upon you
