Normal

What is normal to you?

To me, there's no such thing as "normal" because normality is an ideal in one's society or surroundings. Most of us see normal as having two legs, two arms, and so on and so forth. Anything we see beyond our ideal image of being normal is considered weird..*twitch*.

So I drove into a parking lot one time and saw this person pull into a handicap parking spot. When you think handicap, you think wheelchair and whatever, right? So it just ticked me off when I saw the guy come out of the car perfectly fine. So then I ran him over.

Being a math geek, when I hear the word "normal", I think of a Gaussian distribution.
I guess I think of people that way, too.

If someone talks really loud, say, plus two sigma, I would consider that "weird".

In high school culture, there is a battle between the urge to conform and the urge to be unique.
Clearly, one can only achieve greatness by being unique, so being unique is (hopefully) encouraged in school.
Some kids feel ostracized by their peers.
This is an "normal" feeling, a part of growing up, but for some people, becomes overwhelming and they go all emo.
Emo is bad.

Normal ? When you do the things which people around you do. And do think as what your companion think.

And that's what I always have as my motto.. Being creative is just a little think step ahead than normal ways.

Gendou, that is so true...the high school bit.

Normal is what is common, usual, average, the general way something is or is seen to be by a person. It is relative.

For example- In Japan, to the Japanese, it is normal to speak Japanese. In Canada, to canadians it isn't. So speaking Japanese is both normal and abnormal depending on the person and location involved. To speak Japanese in Canada for a Japanese person would still be normal to them. And vice-versa etc.

So, just because something isn't normal to some people somewhere doesn't mean there's anything wrong with it or that it is even original/unique, as it may be the norm else where to other people. It just isn't common to the people and area experiencing it.

Noone should worry about being normal.

But if someone tells you you have an abnormal looking mole, you should probably get that checked out. :P

Normality is simply a human concept. It stems from the beliefs that a single person has compared to how that person conducts their daily life.

For a person to say that something is not normal is to say that the same person would likely not perform a similar action because it detracts from what they perceive as their standard routine.

Normal is however you see it. I don't.

For me normal is a generalization or pertains to something many people do. FOr instance it would be said that to go shopping is normal. Most people do it therefore it's seen as 'normal'. However what is normal changes from area to area and person to person. When a person says they just want to be normal what they mean is that they want to be like the general populous, because in fact they are normal by behaving how they always have.

Like the rest have already said, then the word "normal" is basically an expression used to define what one self think is normal. It does however depend on who and where you are to be found. More specifically your person and the environment which you are in. It somehow reminds me of the often used phrase "get a life" What does that mean exactly? Some use it against people who -let's say- are using pretty much all their time on gaming computer games and/or console games. Strictly speaking, they do have a life, they have just decided on using it to play.

The word "normal" and the phrase "get a life" can thus be seen as being an expression from people who do not endorse or approve of other people's way of living/acting.

A part of human nature is to try to make unfamiliar things like ourselves. To tell someone to "get a life" is to tell them to act more like oneself, rather than who the other person wants to be.

How you want to live your life, and whether you want to call yourself normal or not, is entirely up to you. Nobody has the right to try and change you but you.

Normal is pretty much an imaginary standard in my head which i compare subconsciously with everything i see and make judgments upon them based off of how significantly they deviate from this norm

People have always said how odd I act. When my brother's gf says, "why the heck can't you just act normal?" I always say "why do I wanna be like you?" Normal is pretty much what N.I.Q said, Normal ? When you do the things which people around you do. And do think as what your companion think. Very good qoute by the way. And I've always tried to not to be as everyone does.

Everyone and everything is unique in some way.
So the only normality is being different.

Not that I completely believe that but, hey, it spices up the thread.
It sounds cool too.

"Normal" bah there is no such term in human beings, everyone is different so how can there be a normal person, yes there can be a model person but not a normal person, that is my individualistic view.

"Normal" is different between each group of people which usually means using themselves as a foundation or basis to compare other people. Which really annoys me as everyone of my friends perspective of normal means that I would be considered a freak.

Though I dont believe in the term "Normal" because I think everyone is unique.

I'm really not very clear at presenting things like this, but I am extrememly interested at this "normal" thread.

Basically, most people think of themselves and the people that they can relate to as normal. Anything that exceeds or doesn't reach the expectations of a person would be considered abnormal, whether it be weird, crazy, or god-like, some of the terms that people use to describe abnormality in good and bad ways. Each person has a different criteria for what they deem normal or abnormal, so on an individual sense, there is such a thing as normal, but as some posters said before, on the whole, normal means nothing, due to differences of everybody.

I hope I got my point across...

"normal" is practically an insult nowadays.

@viste- wow that is true, i never really thought about that.
that just goes to show you the egotistical zeitgeist of today's citizenry, everyone is now raised to think of themselves as special and unique, its so....annoying in my opinion.
well this is rather off topic so i'll shutup, i've already put in my two cents worth on this topic
