Hydrogen Fuel Cell
|
I have just recently learned about hydrogen fuel cell technology after watching a show on cars. When will this technology be available and what potential do you see for further uses? Please share your thoughts and opinions. |

well the technology would be easily achieveable in my opinion but the fact that the current car fuel companies would most likely do everything in thier power to keep that technology away from the public just so that they could keep getting money |

the problem with hydrogen power is that it is not truly a SOURCE of power. hydrogen fuel is not a renewable energy source, it is a way of storing energy. electrical energy is used to separate the proton from the electron pair that makes up a hydrogen atom. if many cars used hydrogen fuel cells, electrical power plants would have to churn out more electricity. sure we would be less dependent on foreign oil. the major concern for me is that we stop using ancient dead organisms for our source of energy, and start looking for renewable resources. biodiesel, for example, can be up to 70% renewable. |

Hydrogen fuel cells reverse the process of electrolysis using a extremly expensive and hard to make metal catalyst thats problem one with fuel cells, but most likly the process will be refined and be able to be sent to the market soon. Second major problem is hyrdogen, its not natural and you have to seperate it from natural gas or water, each process is at the moment expensive... so oil is still much much much cheaper. Some smaller problems is with having hydrogen in cars, hydrogen explodes and could extremly dangerous in car accidents. If youwant you can purchase a Toyota SUV with three fuel cells and electric motor for $100,000 and all that cargo room is filled with tanks... its not the "evil" corporations screwing you this time, its the progress of technology. Oh and I dont like fuel cells.. I am all up for harnessing solar raditaion or negative/postive engery reactors.

*Pulls out recent Popular Science for May '05* I was stuck in O'Hare just about a week ago while my connecting flight was delayed, so I picked up a Popular science while I waited around. Funny enough, it has a small section on a new Hydrogen Fuel cell that will be on the market in 2007 for ~$20. It will be used to charge your gadgets like iPods, Laptops, CellPhones(Especially the new smartphones, they die in no time. x.x), abd other items of the like. Though, there is a new difference, instead of using methanol like most current HFCs, it will use a mix of glycerol and sodium borohydride which is much easier to work with, as well it has a much lower chance of blowing up, enough so to be allowed on planes. Also, this mixture also means that it is easier to set of a reaction instead of the old meathods, making it much cheaper.

What would happen if the fuel cell was damaged? |

same thing as if you shot an engine block.. it just wouldnt work anymore.. there could be an explosion.. but eh fuel cells are also very very expensive and will be for a while, so i think most product with one would try hard as to protect them... as for hydrogen fuel cells in 2 years at 20 bucks.. I laugh quite loudly.. Popular Science is known for a slight sense of overhype

guess what is the cheapest sorce of hydrogen? Natural Gas, when it combusts, it releases H molecules which can be easily captured... We will then be futher dependent on Oil and Natural Gas ;_; |
Re: Hydrogen Fuel Cell

why not water? H2 O you get two atoms of hydrogen... and you release good oxygen too. I like it.
Why is life so hard?

Re: Hydrogen Fuel Cell

indeed but you need electrolisis to get the hydrogen, therefore you waste a lot of electricity |

well being dependent on natural gas isnt that bad as oil cause its cleaner and much more "natural".. also Hydrogen fuel cells are reverse electrolisis so to use electricy from a power plant preform electrolisis to achieve hydrogen then to take a fuel cells to produce a lower level (due to effeciency ratings of the various proceses) electricy to power things is rather.. not worth it.
