Profile Reset? (Windows XP)
Link | by Terror on 2007-04-29 12:19:27 (edited 2007-04-30 16:12:06)
I've had problems with my computer last night. It was slow and "clicked" and froze every time I did something to "big" (which of course was fine before last night). After getting up this morning, I restarted the computer (Torrents....) and my entire profile had been "reset". By reset I mean:

Windows XP
-My wallpaper and icons were reset besides the ones it knows are there.
-"My Documents" folder was "wiped clean" of all data (Including music, picture and avi data, anything else I put in there....)
-Lost all "application data" which includes anything about IE, WMP, FF, anything off uTorrent, etc.
-No data was lost. (ie: If I lost all the music/torrent/etc. data, there would be a HUGE increase in the free space of drive C of my computer, but there isn't...)

This happened once before but I can't remember how we fixed it or what the problem really was, and with my father out right now, I'd sort of like to fix this (or get info/ideas on it) before he gets home.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Update: Nvm, it is fixed for now. It was solved by a system restore from before the event. I'd delete this, but I feel that if anyone comes across this problem, they may benefit from this information.
There is a file that dictates basically everything about your desktop and such. Apparently, when that file becomes corrupted, the ability for your personal settings to load is shot right out the window, so it reverts to a "all" profile, which would be like a profile you made at your computer's start but no one ever used it.
As stated above, it would seem like your whole profile is reset, but really, all the data is there, but there is nothing dedicating your computer to find and set up the connections. If you were go to "C:/documents and settings/username/my documents", it's all still there.
Also stated above, a simple system restore seems to fix the problem. Another way to do it is to replace the corrupted file (unsure what it was now, but it wont copy if you try to "post-backup" your files, which makes it easy to find) and replace and rename another profile's file and use it as a replacement, but it'll be like starting over cause you will have the other profiles setup.
Hopefully it's gone for me.... (Seems so....)
Thank you Eucha.
My father found a similar program (for less, btw) and it found 15,000 problems...
Thanks for that, the computer works "perfect" now.
