Ubuntu or Fedora Core ( or others)
Link | by palladium on 2007-04-21 00:36:32
Hello, I'm thinking of dual-booting my WinXP machine with Linux. Problem is, I'm new to Linux and I don't really know which distribution is the easiest to use. I'm tossing between FC and Ubuntu (both of which I heard is the best for home use). Which one is better, or are there any better ones out there?

i'm using Ubuntu. i haven't tried using Fedora but i can say that Ubuntu is easiest to learn and use. there's many flavor of Linux out there but after trying Red Hat, Debian and Ubuntu, i've sticked onto Ubuntu. It seemed to be much better than the other two that i've tried.

Fedora Core is first come-in used before UBUNTU. UBUNTU is the latest than Fedora Core and it is more easy to learn than Red Hat or Fedora. So in terms of choosing, get UBUNTU.

But if you use 2 systems, you should download a Boot-up for Dual Booting for Windows and Linux because you use diffirent OS Forms and Linux can be install on a sole computer. I said that because it is easy to install Multiple Windows OS than Dual Booting OS (Windows and Linux).

I just conduct an experiment it to my Computer 4 years ago while Linux Mandrake was just release. I instal 2 Win OS (2000 & XP) first and 1 Linux OS (Mandrake) at second installation. After the installation, instead Mandrake is added to the Boot-up OS Menu, it remains to Win2000 and WinXP and vise versa. I just fix it when I use Booting-up Sequence software that is recomended in both Windows OS and Linux.

Just find it to the internet or in www.download.com because my Boot-up System is lost and I can't find it anymore.

I can't really tell what he was trying to say, but you need space to install Ubuntu on. If you don't have a spare hard drive to install it to, or an empty partition, you will have to repartition your existing drive, which involves reinstalling windows, so be prepared for that, if need be.
Be sure to install windows first, and Ubuntu second to get a functional boot-loader working to allow you to choose between the two OSes at boot.

or you can use Partition Magic to repartition your hard-drive. another alternative is having another HDD

You usually download applications from synaptic (located inside your start bar) instead of downloading from sites when it comes to linux. Most of the packages you find on linux sites will be source code, which is really hard to compile unless you know what you're doing in ubuntu.

I also recommend ubuntu to you, not because it is inherently easier than redhat or other distros, but because it has far more community support than any other linux distro (which means it's easier to get your questions answered.)
