Are you Realy You?!
Link | by N.S.KAI on 2007-04-20 00:34:06
Well I was just wondering, since my brain is pretty messed up right now, how can you be sure that how you see your self or perceive your self is real or is reality and not just a product of your ever creative brain? I don’t know if you’ll understand my question but, it’s like when you see your self in the mirror or if you look at your pictures, how can you truly say that this is me, this is reality and its not how I want to see my self, this is the real thing. Am I making sense here? Hehehe.
I mean you might see your self as a handsome hunk or something but in reality you’re just an ordinary Joe. The mind can is strong to create such illusions if that’s what it’s called.

Things like that happen.
I think, one solution to that is to ask the people around you what they "see" in you. To know if its real or not, then test yourself. If you're talking about your character or personality, then thats a different issue, if you know what I mean. Physically, of course you can think of anything you want when you look at yourself..sometimes it is good to think positively and being confident, so don't worry if you think you're handsome or something. Just be humble, and be yourself. If you think you're seeing illusions of a fake "You", then you need counseling.

Well yeah but that’s not what I meant its like is this real? I mean you’ve watched beautiful mind right? What if instead of imagining friends or people to interact with, you create a self image of your self like in fight club! Hehehe.

Haha. This is not bogus, right? Are you really okay? If you have a problem, don't be afraid to share and open up.

Hehehe! Just got a very serious issue with my brain! Hehehe. Its one of those days I tend to contemplate about the universe! Hehehehe. These past few months I’ve been blessed to have met a good friend of mine, I think she’s a member of this site, but it just feels too good to be true you know? I think like, what if she sees me for who I am, you see I’ve been surviving life by using masks, created images of ones self, and sometimes it gets to you, I’ve forgotten my true self…..
I adapt to any environment school, street, home, family, friends. Trough the years I’ve adapted I’ve become stronger and better in adapting that I’ve lost my self in all the lies I’ve created. Am I making sense?

Ah, I know what you mean. There's a lot of people like you.
You're faking yourself just to "fit in" with the people around you. It's not really adapting, but more like trying to fit in. You know, my advice is for you to just be yourself, and don't worry about what people think about you. They don't care and they're not real friends if they only like you for being "one of them" or wearing a mask like them. Hey, the only way to find real friends and people who accept you for who you are, is to be yourself all the time. Trust me, those people will come to you and you'll know who they are. I know its hard, but thats the only way to know yourself more. You'll have a better life if you'll start being true to yourself....and to the people you interact with.

Fitting in?! heheheh. Nope!
I don’t adapt to fit in or be cool, I’ve got my own pace, I adapt to rule….
I’m what you call the shadow king, I rule by manipulation and control…..
I have never went down as low as to kiss some else’s ##s just to avoid conflict or getting bullied, I’m a legend in every school I’ve gone to, elementary I was one of the top dogs who beat the crap out of the high school students, high school I chose to become a middle man and control the information network of the school, once or twice I’ve lost my way but I was able to manage. Adapting to keep my self from becoming someone’s b###h
Has become an automatic reaction, I’ve lost my true self in all of this that I’m no longer sure as to who I really am.

Haha, really...?
I used to do that all the time, bud.
Though I found better ways to accomplish my goals...
Anyway, back onto the original topic of this thread.
All I have to say is, if you try hard enough, whatever to perceive yourself to be, you will be what you perceived.

So I drove into a parking lot one time and saw this person pull into a handicap parking spot. When you think handicap, you think wheelchair and whatever, right? So it just ticked me off when I saw the guy come out of the car perfectly fine. So then I ran him over.

I guess I have not figured out who was staring at me in the mirror this morning. We can change ourself in many ways both physically and mentally. To say the person you are is the same as the person even a few minutes ago would be wrong. Although you may not consciously realize it, we change from moment to moment. Whether we perceive ourselves as being this, that or the other thing does not we have or do not have that trait. If we work towards it then we can have the ability to accomplish it. We cannot really define true reality because we process everything through our own relative being. Sure there are certain things we all tend to agree on but who is to say that could not be overturned. Falsifiability is an important thing to keep in mind when dealnig with your life. To test yourself and your surroundings to find what is true to you.

I hold this concept in mind. Set out through life with the intent to follow through completely. It is then that we replace stone walls with glass ones. There are certain things we may never be able to accomplish or come to terms with in life but if we set those instances to stone walls then we tend to avoid that path altogether. In doing this have we learned that much about ourselves? I believe we learn more if we extend as far as we can go and only then hit a glass wall. You can then choose where to go from there now knowing your limits.

I’m just fascinated as to how we create this solid persona of our selves, but I always want to ask if that persona is how others see us, if we look at our selves in the mirror, our brain can say “that is you, that is who you are” but it may not be the same with others.
I’d like to give an example, when a kid looks at a drunken stranger and sees him as the big bad wolf or when a rape victim sees her attacker as the devil or something like that.
Different perspectives I guess, but which of them is the truth or reality.

I don't think we can really figure out the truth of reality. It is always going to be processed and sifted through our own perspective. The only reason we recognize and accept our own image is because we know exactly what went into it. There is no point in life when you can be anything other than yourself. So really you are hte best judge of yourself. It just takes a bit of time to settle into your own skin and figure out what you want yourself to be. That is what is really true.

lots of people have different tastes...even one's self-image--if one cannot accept his/her beauty then some people might even find it attractive, and vice versa.

But for me I don't know my real me at heart. I always have different outlook that depend on the environment, which causes me different mood swings that barely identifies my true personality ;_;

Forget self image, forget all those, what I wan to ask is it the reality of you, I remember the topic we had in human philosophy “I see there for I am” or something like that, it states that “me” is defined by concepts. What I want to know is that how this concept form the entity “me” and how it is accepted as reality creating the persona that we now have which proves “me” exists as a unique individual.

You, or me, all of us might be virtual images living in a virtual world. Nobody knows. We might not even exist. IF YOU CAN'T FIND AN ANSWER TO YOUR QUESTION...WHY BOTHER ASKING? It will waste your time, and energy. You could have done more productive things had you not started doubting your identity. Some people, are busting their arses just to be able to live another day. Instead of thinking about whether you are real or not, try reaching out. That way, even if you are fake in truth, you were at least very real to someone else.

if life gives you shit, make fertilizer.

Kaz might sound stupid but he has a point. But I just want you to know that I'm not a lazy bum because I wan't to talk about those kind of things. I strive too to survive you know?

Do we really exist? I don't know... and ulteriorly, who cares?
If we are not wise enough to see that then maybe we are just condemned to stay wondering about this forever and ever. So I say, just enjoy your virtual or maybe real existence as you can and while you can ^__^

Well said Kei and Kaz. I agree. Whether it's real or not, I'm sure if we knew it wouldn't make that much of a difference, we still have to live our lives; just do it to the fullest!

Edit: Oh I like Shinta's comments too. He is talking about self-awareness exercises and lots of other psychology things. I agree with him too. Self-awareness and asking people in contact with you regularly about yourself is a good way to find out if you are truly being yourself. Then again what is "being yourself?" This is doing whatever feels truly natural and comfortable to you. Whether it's good or bad. The trick is to figure out the bad things and find ways to make them good. Tell them what you come up with when you analyze yourself, and see if they agree with you. They may pick up things that you wouldn't eben dream of labeling yourself as. Eben though we are our worsts critics, in most cases we are definitely our best excuse makers too. We tend to right off a lot of bad things about ourselves, make excuses about why we are that way/ do certain things, or become blind to them all together... If none of this is making sense, then maybe professional counseling is a good option too. I'm no pro, but we did talk about this stuff in class lol. It can be a good experience for you if anything. Good luck! ^_^

Here's my own view:
I think people are afraid to show their real 'self' is because they're afraid that people would reject them. That's painful, honestly.

I think Ive heard about this before.
In college we were discussing this and it seems to have come up before in the past. The answer they came up with was...
"I think, Therefore I am"

Hmm well I'd like to think that I act the same online as I do when interacting with other people in the real world but not everything about me stays the same. I'm still nice to people and I still don't really talk aloud that that much but a few things change. There are somethings that I would never do in the real world because I'm way too shy, and there are still some things that I'm too shy to do on the web. I don't think that I'm completly out of character just slightly diffrent. The mind is a powerful thing and it makes us percieve ourselves differently.
