Ummm... Can we have Philosophy as a topic? After all, Philosophy is the mother of all sciences. I wish this forum lasts.. Questions: Is there an evil genius that tells us on what we see is an elephant eventhough it is a giraffe? Is every thing real or just a dream? How can we be sure that what happened yesterday was all real and that evil genius did not implanted us with memories of the past? Is everyone around you are not paid actors to perform for you to be your parents, family, friends, schoolmates, and enemies till you die? How can we be sure that we really exist? Hope this forums lasts..  Curses! I'm too cute to the core. |

How can we be sure that what happened yesterday was all real ... I heard that we sometimes really have memories of thing which never happened. So you can't be sure... Perhaps it's like in Matrix: The life we seem to live is just an illusion.   |

Reminds me of a joke While having tea, Descartes was asked if he wanted any sugar, he replied "I think not." Reality is an odd thing, you can be the figment of some imagination or you could be real. It's just a complex subject to think about. I choose to believe that I'm living in a reality. Although, with me, since my memory isn't as good as it should be, I should really be challenging that idea. It's just the matter of knowing and believing.  |

"How can we be sure that we really exist?" Sounds like someone is playing radical skeptic! Of course, we cannot disprove the theory that all observations are manipulated by some great magician, or created inside some computer program. However, nature seems to follow certain rules. For example, drop a book, and it will always fall to the flow. For all I know, the next time I drop a book, it might fall up to the ceiling. This may be seen as evidence for a world controlled by an evil magician, or that it was a glitch in the matrix. Since this sort of thing doesn't tend to ever happen, it is safe to say that all phenomena follow certain physical laws. It is not a matter of "FAITH" or any other such nonsense to say that there is SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE that we are living in a universe that follows physical law. That doesn't make it any more REAL than a world encapsulated by crystalline spheres. It's simply the universe we happen to find ourselves. Clearly, being a radical skeptic doesn't help you understand the universe you live in, i.e. it doesn't make any testable predictions. Ockham's Razor suggests that it is therefore not correct to be a radical skeptic. Plus, I can't stand the anxiety of constantly worrying that objects will fall up, instead of down!

The comments on this thread remind me of the movies such as "The Matrix" and "The Truman show." I always like to start with something basic whenever discussing fundamental questions such as what reality is. I am a firm believer of dichotomy, you know, the ying yang thing. I believe it is the most basic principle of things. Either there is or there is not. Either it is or it is not. Everything else is a mix of these two extreme. So is there a reality? The two possible answers are: there is or there is not. Reality itself is up to interpretation but its existence isn't. If there isn't reality, I won't be here typing about whether there is reality or not. Someone once said: "reality is such that when you close your eyes, it doesn't go away." I think this is a pretty good definition of reality.  |

Of course we can't proof that there's a magician or not. Even when there is a magician, it won't change the fact that we perceive the world in the manner we do. The only thing that depends on what we believe is our attitude. |

But what if in reality when you drop a book it really falls up to the ceiling and that evil magician changes that fall of the book into the ground and that evil genius implanted us with some kind of memory that makes us think that the book falls up into the ground eventhough it really falls into the cieling?. | There was a story I hear a while back that had the punchline. "Am I the man dreaming of the butterfly or the butterfly dreaming of the man?" What stirs up our thoughts is how a these trillions of cells all work together to create a human being and how a 3lb. wad of flesh in between our ears generates consciousness. That same wad of flesh slowly develops a sense of reality that is well mostly unique. Even if we grow up not knowing the true objective reality of things our reality is just real as yours because we live it from moment to moment. We cannot know anything else so straining to grasp things outside of our scope is like fumbling for a light in the dark. Sometimes you hit it and other times you don't. But if you're eyes are closed, you won't know whether the lights are on anyway. And no I am not a paid actor because then I'd be able to pay for my tuition! -.- |

@andvari: i think "what if" should not exist in philosophy. there's too much question of "what if" in this world and off course it's unexplainable since you create this stuff and even you get the answer for that question, it;s gonna lead to another "what if" question.

Isn't that great? Starting from a question that leads us to another question. Why would I stop asking questions if I want to learn? If "what if" should not exist in philosophy perharps you can tell me some other forms of question. In my opinion, if "what if" gone it would be really hard for us to come up with theories and ideas. Since you said that what if is not good in philosophy and you don't agree on what I think, please accept my apology for posting such kind of things. Curses! I'm too cute to the core. |

i would not say an unsubstantiated guess can be called ideas. at least in scientific usage. and i can't find any logical explanation or answer for your question. Since you come up with this question, maybe you can start with your thought about that firsy. pardon me for my lack of sense of language, what i mean by my previous post is not that you should stop asking question, but what is the point of questioning something that would lead to no answer? this remind me of endless debate of many common question in religion xD well don't bother to what i said. I'm still have long way to go to understand this stuff. again, pardon me if my post doesn't make any sense.

If you think there's an evil genius running the show, FINE, believe in it. Nobody's stopping you. If you think books really fall up to the ceiling instead of accepting what your senses perceive, you are just creating another problem for yourself. It's like saying 1+1=2. and almost everyone knows that. But if you start thinking "what if 1 is actually 2 and 2 is actually 3?" Then you will end up wasting the time that has been given to you to help change the world for the better. You will end up creating more doubt and confusion...And these are the elements of conflict. As small a topic this may be, this really isn't helping anybody right now. I used to think of things like those. But my cuz told me it's useless, so long as you're living in a world where everything can be doubted.
