Can anyone read Japanese handwriting?
Link | by rokuemon on 2007-03-24 11:26:15
I'm translating a manga and I've come up against some unreadable handwriting! Can anyone read this? (I think this is some of the worst handwriting I ever saw in a manga!)

The context is that the main character may have cancer but needs to go back for more tests. This is the doctor speaking (the main character seems to be running this scene through his mind, as he is not actually with the doctor at this moment).

I can only make out 今日の and a few fragments.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give!

last character in that second line might be れ?
I can't make out the middle radical in the first character for the life of me.
Second character might be 車? Though it probably isn't.

Only thing I can really make out as well is 今日の. That is some pretty bad handwriting.

It may be .....地方 今日の降九確率...(probability going down by nine today?)

I'm not sure, it's very difficult to read and I'm not a native speaker although I'm sure native speakers will have difficulty figuring this out at first glance....

good luck.

Wow thanks Wakka, that's really helpful, I'm amazed you read that. The 地方 is a location suffix, so the first two kanji are a place. However, Isaac is right about the れ it's 今日の降れ確率 and the last is just は. "There is a probability of a fall (rain) in the Kantou* area today"

Thanks to both of you.

Edit: * Someone else worked out the place, it's 関東 (Kantou). I expected it to be an obvious place. (東 is a very similar kanji to your guess of 車, Isaac).

I think it says: "Gongton region, today's rain is quite frequent, isn't it?"

Gongton is a province in China.

Anybody, please correct me if I am wrong.

that was 東? I don't see the last two strokes being right. Err well, I guess the person just got lazy and wrote a line instead of the two strokes. Really looks like 車 to me.

Man, that handwriting is terrible.

Sorry for this one...*eventhough im half-Japanese*
there are some Japanese people who cant right proper
kanji or maybe they are just comfortable with their
handwriting...I cant even read my father's kanji
after all...but to tell honestly, foreigners can
write clear kanji rather than Japanese...sorry for
all Japanese out there...I can read kanji but...
clear kanji ok!^,^

アイザックさん, it looks like 車 to me as well, but considering the state of the handwriting, the person is obviously not paying attention to detail! Kantou seems likely to me as it is a big place everyone knows. I see it as just being a snatch of background radio (that shape of text box is often used for TV or radio speech). Unless there is a well known place ending in 車? I dont think so though.

Benfokさん interesting suggestion, but as I said above, they will be talking about a well known place in Japan. I also don't think it means frequent, I'm sure it's just saying that rain is likely (確率 probability).

Ichvonさん no need to apologise, you should see my boss's writing, and he's American ^^ Every language has bad writers ^^ (I agree non-Japanese usually write kanji quite nicely, though!)

Crazzyさん the manga is 後ろ姿の夏の猫 (ushirosugata no natsu no neko) by 国枝彩香 (Kunieda Saika). It's a BL one-shot, strictly for girls (笑!)

By the way, I know what 後ろ姿の夏の猫 in my head, but what are people's ideas of translating that into a snappy English title? Any ideas?

どうもありがとうございました皆さん!

Yeah, 東 makes more sense, just rather surprising.

Snappy title for that? Hmm, I'll think on that one for a little bit, nothing coming to mind at the moment. It's kind of weird when you try to put it into english at first.

As for handwriting. I found it real odd, my 先生 complimented me one day on my handwriting. My handwriting with romanized script has always been absolutely awful for some reason, so to hear that was really surprising and amusing at the same time.

I'd guess that we (foreigners) would really need to write things out clearly and neatly to be able to easily differentiate things at the start, which is what could lead to the cleaner handwriting.

Kanji, right?

If I had passed Chinese School I'm sure I would've been able to tell you what it meant. @_@
I'm kind of good at reading messy writing.

I can just read quite a handful of katakana, only one or two hiragana characters, and only a few kanji symbols.
