Open source
|
Is it just me or does the quality of proprietary software lag behind open source software quality. Sure, there is some decent proprietary software like Opera, Mac OS X, and iTunes but look at Windows and Roxio CD maker pro and Norton antivirus. I love Kubuntu and Ubuntu Linux but I can't use them because I use 56K and don't feel like installing a hardware modem. I am watching Revolution OS right now and it is an amusing documentary about the open source moment with Linus Torvalds and several other people involved in the open source movement and they say that contrary to popular belief, they do make money off of it through tech support. Their claim that their tech support is superior is true. I tried reporting glitches to Microsoft and their tech support was horrible and the tech support at Symantec was a joke wheras the tech support for Ubuntu was very good.

Open source software can be treated just the same as any other software: Certain software is better at some things than others. You should make your decision on what to use based on what you want to do with it. Open source may seem more attractive just because you don't have to pay for it. |
