Two days ago when I went to my weekly computer club at school someone there at the beginning of the club started talking about 'trusted computing'. Supposed to be some chip that limits what OS (maybe programs, not sure) you can use on your computer. He said that there's legislation tried to be passed on this right now (or soon). A really quick search on Google (I'm about to go to bed here) revealed nothing about the current news on it. I was wondering if someone could find some current articles relating to this. Here's a good place to start (if the link works) Here |

Looks like pure evil. If this becomes mandatory I may never buy a new computer ever again.

Haven't heard of it but maybe what you heard wasn't a chip, maybe it was the product of an initiative by Microsoft called the trusted computing initiative meant to incorporate security work into every aspect of the design of a Microsoft program. It can be seen in Vista as the security system similar to what is in Unix being the distinction between the two levels of access for everybody. Programs have to ask you for the privilages to make system wide changes. A trusted in computing means any part that your computer is dependant on.

I'm pretty sure this is something else. There's going to be a chip inside every computer that communicates with the manufacturer and effectively control your computer remotely. In this Trusted Computing alliance, they want to make it so that they control what you trust, not you. Read the article and you'll understand what it's all about. Watch this video for a simple explanation

Didn't notice the link. If that happens, I am building my own damn machine sans the chip. I would be sunk in one of my hobbies, testing my security software by searching for viruses and malware. I also searching for phishing sites. I have been doing it for a while. I am now testing the IE7 phishing filter and it blows in comparison to the Firefox 2 phishing filter. My point is that OEMs can't control your computer because somebody like me may be searching for malware to test software.
