Popcorn.net problem...
Link | by on 2006-10-16 22:50:42
I dont know what the problem is and why its doing this, but its so annoying and it kills my crappy laptop. Whenever I am Idle for about 10 minutes, or use the laptop for a long period of time, a program called "notifier.exe" and an AD plays, the video is high quality, and the sound plays a nasty sounding (a song that really sucks) looping song. I tried to see if I could find it on "Add/Delete Programs" but I dont see it there, as for how it somehow was installed onto my laptop, I have no clue. My cusin might've accidently had it installed when he was searching the web and constantly using MySpace, but other than that, I dunno.

I tried looking over the net, didnt find anything, so I ask anyone here if they could help me out with this problem. My laptop is already suffering enough by just running, and I wanna at least get rid of this stupid ad for good! So with that said, anyone have any solutions to fix this problem?

Here's a pic of it happening....
(Wow, now iTunes skipps and freezes when it changes through songs lol)

Have you tried running a anti-spyware, malware or all those anti-virus programs?

Oh and by the way, what linux are you running? ^_^

Edit: Now i'm confused. You have the linux icon as your start button, but its Windows Task Manager? Winlinux?

Lindows? wait... kinda looks like... is that windows nemesis? or Vista?

anyways... i think it might be an adware... try running programs like Ad-Aware SE Pro... if it still persists...

Well... a search on the net always helps... and my search tells me it cant be removed... (ouch) but can be blocked by the firewall... (and thats how they usually solve it... or just by merely renaming it...)

and when notifier.exe is deleted... it will come back on the next update... (so its pretty much useless...)

Ooohhhh its a Linux skin. lol sorry about that confusion, its a program called WindowsBlind (something like that) and you can change how it looks, I just got that because I got tired of the windows look

[back on topic]
I tried the anti-virus one......well.....I have Norton....so that didnt work (obviously), and I have SpySweeper which takes away spyware and adware, and that didnt work either......but I guess using some more wouldn't mess it up any more than it already is. >.>
Any good programs I could use without having to spend money....(im broke right now)

Theres a million

Try Avast: http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html
Mcaffe: http://us.mcafee.com/root/downloads.asp ( you need to sign up for a free acount i believe)

And AVG/Ewido: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1

Mcaffee is good, but if you don't want the hassle of signing up for a account go with AVG. I think each of these have a 30-90 day try out time.

I'll make this breif and concise since I want to get back to watching my movie, one program you can use is called ad-aware, and has handled plenty of programs in the past like this for me, plus it tells you where the exe file is on your computer.

First, go to this URL: http://pack.google.com/intl/en/pack_installer_new.html?ciNum=5
and select and install the one called ad-aware se personal. (if the URL isn't the right one then just look up google updater on google, it should be pretty easy to find). It'll require you to install the google updater, but that isn't a problem so let it. Then after it's all installed, when you open it and click start at the lower right corner, select perform full system scan and then next. It should pick up any malicous programs like that off the bat. Then after that, if you want to take it to the next step (which I'd HIGHLY recommend for this sort of problem) go to http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial101.html for a tutorial and walkthrough on how to remove the registry values so it won't ever come back. If you want me to explain it in simpler terms than their wording, just ask and I'll post again with simpler instructions, but for now, back to Mai-Hime.

Beware the quiet people, You don't know their intentions
(small signatures are sooo much cooler since they don't annoy people trying to read through posts!)

I'd hate to say this but why did you goto popcorn.net in the first place when siteadvisor has this marked as a hub for getting your computer hijacked and if you don't believe me then go there yourself.

http://www.siteadvisor.com/sites/popcorn.net

You should be able to find links there to get rid of the garbage that is in your laptop.

And for gods sake just don't go there again unless you like this happening to you
