What are some great books for learning Japanese?

Although the net is overflowing with information for learning Japanese, I prefer a more practical method. What are some great books used by teachers and students in college or high school classes?

IJ-Intermediate Japanese is awesome.
In Genki, going Genki II straight is better than squabbling time with one

yeah...the genki book is great...
we used it in my college and I studied out the book japanese for busy people too....I can also recommend you if you wanna learn how to write kanji (in hiragana they have it also at the bookstores) , a kanji card set. I have the first one which has 448 kanji in it. on the cards are the kanjis and in the back the show you the stroke order and what the meaning is in japanese and chinese. Also I have a little japanese grammar book which is really good as well!! ;-)
well...have fun learning japanese and I hope i was able to help ya. ;-)

Go through a dictionary, a textbook, and a phrase book, then go to Japan for a few months to get the best concepts of it. XD

Busy People is very popular in classes, its what is mostly used in the UK in classes, and its how I started learning. The downside is its all based around a business environment, which puts some people off. Personally I dont think this matters. Another possible disadvantage is that you have to go through Book 1 without learning any plain form (all ~masu form), but if you stick with the series you do learn it eventually.

I'm sure the Genki series is also good, as many people recommend it. The most serious classes I know of, at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, use "Minna no Nihongo" (for beginners on) and "Teima-betsu Chuu-kyuu kara Manabu Nihongo" (sounds scary) for higher level.

A lot of people seem to use Pimsleur CDs to learn Japanese, but I think this is spoken only.

On the web my favourite sites are
Tae Kim's Guide to Japanese Grammar and
Teach Yourself Japanese by Japanese guy Takasugi Shinji.

They both have good forums with very knowledgable people to help you.

For self study of kanji I recommend Remembering The Kanji (Book 1) by James Heisig, and a good site to go with it Reviewing The Kanji.

when i was taking clases before i had to quit because we were moving most students had a japanese-english dictionary but the text we used was one that the teacher wrote herself so she could teach us easyer. i still have it and plan to study it later. it is good enough that you can write a short like 1 page composition near the end. only problem is that it has no kanji because that was semester 2 and io left like half way through semester 1

For a beginner, I guess it'd have to be Minna no Nihongo. That textbook is comprehensive and covers everything from the basics to the really complicated stuff. Why don't you look over at www.thejapanesepage.com/news.php? The JapanShop there is pretty good!

I liked "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Japanese". It was really useful. I still remember some of the grammar stuff, even though I read it a year ago.

Life is short. Watch all the anime you can :)
