String theory

I have had my first introduction of physics this year and have been bothered by something- if string theory is true then strings are essentially the smallest and most basic form of matter in the universe and if this is true. at first i thought the strings were pure energy but apparently they produce it instead by vibrating or something of that nature my question is what are the strings composed of if anything

pwned! lol, good job riceboks. wait, i thought the strings in string theory were made from cat hair? COSMIC cat hair! no, but seriously, the strings are not MADE of anything, per se. rather, they are measurable vibrations in 11-dimensional space. if someone were to say, "the strings are made of pure energy", i may roll my eyes, but i would not say they were wrong.
