I have heard two translations of ther word, 1) A japanese house, and 2) A comic fan or fanboy. So which is it? It would really help if someone japanese or someone who could speak it fluently would answer.

I'm not sure though... I think otaku means...

OTAKU= NERD, GEEK etc etc =.=

wikipedia ^^:

To the general public, Otaku is a variety of fangirl/fanboy obsessed with anime and manga. Alternatively speaking, otakus are hardcores of ACG (Anime-Comic-Game) systems (and even the current computer markets, if you extend the domain of otakus by their spirits of study which resemble people who carry out scientific researches) exploring different aspects of animations related to reality.

In Japanese the term otaku has negative connotations, in English the term is slightly more flexible; some fans believe it has positive connotations, while other fans believe it has negative connotations, especially on Internet forums. Japanophile is a word sometimes used to describe an otaku. Wapanese is a derogatory term that is sometimes used, while others feel many cultures have their own equivalents.

Currently the term otaku is often used as self-description by anime fans with a minute and detailed knowledge. They use it to rally or mock those who have recently begun to watch anime or read manga, and encourage or deride questions on shows and Japanese culture in general.

hahaha... now I know what it means =.= I didn't know before... gao~ hahaha

Maia's right. you must be careful in using the "otaku" especially at japan!

read this...(source: anime-source.com)

"otaku" means "obsessive fan"

This is a dangerous word. It has been adopted by American anime fans to mean any sort of anime/manga fan. Some even use it with pride.

Note that in Japan, "otaku" is a very very harsh insult. It is reserved only for people who never leave their houses (which is what otaku literally means), because they are too frightened of people. No hygeine, no people skills, no motivation, and usually very perverted and disgusting.

Use with great care outside of America.

Hmmm...

I think an "otaku" is, as most people can say, an anime fan. And I think female anime fans are called "omakes" rather than "otakus".

What if I jump out
of this speeding jeepney?
Fly without wings
Reach for the grey-painted heaven
And out into the sea of infinity?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Otaku

The word otaku is derived from an honorific term for another's house or family (お宅, otaku) that is also used as an honorific second-person pronoun (roughly equivalent to usted in Spanish or the singular vous in French)

In modern Japanese slang, an otaku refers to an overly obsessive fan of any one particular theme, topic, or hobby

-> So being an otaku doesnt necessarily mean that you are an anime fanatic

@lady maia
- i would like to correct you that Otaku isnt = Nerd but more or less a geek

Is Anime for Geeks?

thanks :)
