Movie file conversion...

Not so much programming but I'm hoping some computer buffs will stumble upon this here.

Anyone know what sort of applications can play .asf files and does anyone know where I could get a free converter to make it go to mpeg or something?

I know there's some 'free trial' sites but I want an actual free version converter.

help, anyone?

I don't know of a converter in particular, but you may find GraphEdit of some use to you. It's the Swiss army knife of codecs.

Now, I've never used GraphEdit to convert .ASF to MPEG... however, the basics should be the same. Check out my post on converting RealMedia to MP3 using GraphEdit.

Play around with the filters, and search online for tips.

I hope this helps =D

Do any of you guys know how to convert avi. files to mpeg. or wmv.? 'Cause I would like to someday post music videos for the site to watch, if Gendou doesn't mind. Thanks!

Well, if you know about K-Lite Mega Codec Pack, you can use it. But don't ask me where i get this cause it was a gift from my friend.
But with this, all you must do is open it in K-Lite media player(it use classic windows media player appearance) and save it to whatever format you want. I usually use it to change format from .DAT into .Avi or .MPEG.

You can get Xilisoft's trial at least for free, (if you like it, there's a crack for it) and the awesome thing about it is that in addition to converting any video type (MPEG,vob,avi,wmv,asf,mov,mp4,and others I can't remember) into any other, it also converts audio (MP3,wav,mp4audio,ogg,wma,and some others) into any of those types. Xilisoft rocks, although if you don't get the full version and try to convert DVD into any other video type, it'll default to japanese audio if available and without subtitles.
