I once heard Gendou mention something along the lines that he didn't like Microsoft software, and would'nt touch it wiht a ten foot pole or something like that. I don't know if he was serious or joking, but I am interested in an alternative; however Microsoft comes on like every computer you buy! I'm going to buy a new laptop soon, so I was wondering if there I could still purchase a Toshiba (I like this brand a lot), and still run an alternative to Microsoft on it? What programs do you recommend? BTW, can you tell me why these alternatives are better? |

.................. dont have to always specify stuff to Mr. Gendou........ you dont have to follow the words of Mr. Gendou, but microsoft is pretty good in my thoughts. it just depends on what u need the laptop for... if you want sheer space(gigs and LOTS), get ibook, itop, whatever company starts with the 'i'. if you want gaming, graphics, get alienware (kinda costly >.> but good)or microsoft wit a REALLY good video card. Working, average everything else, get normal microsoft. Programs? get the thing for microsoft word package thingy that says teacher and student edition, Nero 9, zone alarm security suite, and yea... |

Yeah, but Gendou is creative and a computer expert, so if it's possible I can get info from someone as smart as him I'll definetly try, especially since he made the comment that got me interested! However, I do appreciate any input! |

As for people who are using PCs (like most of the world) the only realistic alternatives (srry mac people) would be linux. I'd have to ask my friend which distro it was that he recommended to psoplayer that they both love so much....I think it was gentoo (http://www.gentoo.org/) but idk for sure. Anyway, I say linux is a more realistic alternative since it's more similar to Windows, you don't have to learn an entirely new setup (like mac), and you can actually install it on any pc. I'd say more and give more recommendations, but it's late, and I don't have much time so, I'll probably post again later if you have questions.

No. Unless you are an experienced linux user or a genius when it comes to computers, Gentoo will kick your ass and send you running back to Bill Gates with your tail between your legs. Go for Ubuntu [ubuntu.com]. I consider that one to be about as user friendly and Windows replacable as any linux out there. Problem is, it either works on a computer or it flat out doesn't. If it works for you, great, if not, try another type, like SUSE. |

Oh, Ubuntu, that's right! They just sound similar so I got em confuzzled but whatever. SUSE used to not be very good at all, but I have noticed that lately they've gotten back in the game.

UBuntu is a great linux program, I actually already tried my hands on it. however I still like My CentOS for some reason =D. Maybe because of the familiarity? I dunno ^^; SUSE too, My friend actually got it on his PC. Novell XGL FOR TEH WIN!! <3 damn that OS.. xD I LOVE it so much I will re-install my CentOS once I get my hands on it. You HAVE to specify, what do you mean by Microsoft though, software? or OS? Linux is a great one, open source program. It's basically letting you screw anything with it. I'd really recommend you try CentOS for Linux because I.. dunno actually ^^; It's the first Linux OS I tried and I stuck with it for the last 2 years? =D It's simple and doesn't screw you around. Ubuntu is another great one, BTW if for software... I dunno... there are so many alternatives to Microsoft's software. for Microsoft office, for example. There are OpenOffice which I'm using. |

I think he means both software and OS. Yeah, OpenOffice is just as good as microsoft office, cept it's free and nowhere near as prone to messing up I've found. Then there's firefox and Opera in replacement of Internet Exploder, and let's see what else.....

And GAIM in replacment of AIM, MSN, Google Talk, Yahoo Messenger, and more. GIMP instead of Photoshop. Thunderbird instead of outlook or eudora. Audacity instead of soundforge. XviD instead of DivX. Need I continue? |

I would've said the GIMP instead of photoshop and Audacity instead of samplitude, etc., but we're talking about replacing Microsoft software. Though I did forget about Thunderbird..... In the case of codecs though, I'd just go with the Combined Community Codec Pack, otherwise that K-lite codec pack you recommended me. Heck, you can say Adobe Premier instead of Movie Maker, but that's expensive for the full (legal) version.
