A trick on my eyes/ question about perception.

1:I took a LONG trip on the bus across country recently, and I noticed something strange at one point on the trip that when I sat in the front (and also when just waking up). If I opened my eyes after being closed for a little while or more, it would appear as if the bus was moving forward, even though it WAS in park. I even got the physical sensation we were moving forward! This happened every time I opened my eyes after closing them for just a few seconds. Was my re-focusing causing this "trick", and how? Why a moving-forward sensation?

Recently, I tried, on the back seat of the city bus, to duplicate the same trick while wide awake, and it didn't work this time.

2:That reminds me, is it true perception is a phenomenom?

Oh my God, I had the same thing happen to me! It was on a long car ride to Austin and I always sleep in the car when I go there. When we stop at UT, I get that moving sensation like the car is still going! Even after a really long trip to Houston, I get that when I'm not even in the car. I was sleeping in my bed and I still felt like I was moving. For me, the cause might be because I suffer from motion sickness. I don't know about anyone else. Besides that I have no idea why it happens. It's so freaky!

Its probably because your body has gotten so sued to the motion of the moving car that it continues to send feelings of movement even after you have stopped.

This happens whenever you do something for an extended period of time.

I was recently at a waterpark that had a really big wave pool. I stayed in it for a long time and when I left my body felt like it was still swaying back and forth.

I have no idea how that happens, but I've experienced that too, only it always feels like I'm moving in reverse. I always jump up because it's really freaky and it takes me a few to realize that I'm not moving at all. It's the strangest thing. I think that hoheshii might be on the right track though. I've noticed that I still feel the motions when I go to sleep after riding rollercoasters all day.

your eyes are probably refocussing while the first thing your brain comes to mind is that you are in a vehicle, which your mind probably assumes you are in motion due to the fact of what engineer stated.

i think its because your body is subject to motions that it is not naturally adapted to for unusually long periods of time, and so mechanisms in your body begin to perceive motion and it simulates this strange sensation.

something along the lines of this would be this experiment: put both of your fists together and press them against each other tightly for about a minute, then gently take them apart.

Those who think they know everything annoy those who actually do.

there's this "sense of balance" controlled by the cochlea in our ears. the cochlea, a swirling structure in inner ear, contains endolymph, a fluid that's responsible for this sense of equilibrium.
when this fluid is disturbed, like when you were on something moving or in the waves, the fluid will swirl around in the cochlea. and it may take some while for the fluid to settle down. so when your vision says that you're looking at a still scene, but the fluid is still swirling, it can cause contradiction of impulse translation in your brain, thus can cause dizziness.
this is what happens in motion sickness.
