virus on computer..in need of saving!!!!!!!!!
Link | by holster on 2006-07-19 14:00:33
Starting of March 26th, 2006, my computer just suddenly shuts down on its own and for some reason my computer hardware cd drive just can't be read anymore. So, that means no burning or no playing music on the cd rom. Also, another problem occured just 3 weeks ago after my graduation, the computer suddenly stopped reading the sound card though i checked at the setup menu when i restarted my computer to check if the same problem happened with the cd rom and for some reason its still there..the program is still being read but my audio wont play! I checked my stereos and speakers, everything was plugged properly..and nothing was really missing. I was thinking some hacker hacked into my computer and starts messing things up and or a virus is behind it all because surely things shouldnt have gotten this messy on its own in the first place, right?...Now..i really wanna know how to reformat this because i tried a bunch of times and nothing seem to be working..since my cd rom cant be detected my xp cd cant be read and so i can't reformat...NOW...WHAT SHOULD I DO...

PLEASE HELP ME..!!!!

thats really sad...
anyways, first, if your computer cd drive cant read anymore, just get a new one or check if its plug in properly. if its plugged in properly, check the connectors, see if theyre still in tack. take appart your cd reader and check if anything is blocking the scanner to read the disk or something that jammed it to a spot. if you checked all those, and it still doesnt work, yea. its useless. throw it away and get a new one. (clean the cd scanner (the thing that says that you shouldnt touch ))
for the audio. you said you checked the sound card. im asuming its gona be inserted in properly. check the inserting jack(place to insert the plug) to make sure its not lose. if its lose, just resauter it back. if its not that, check the connection to the motherboard (again) to see if anything blocks the connection. im assuming ur speakers work, so nothing to do about that. Also, check the computer if it has the program to run sound. if it doesnt, just get the cd that came with the motherboard and re install it (if ur cd reader works). IF all that doesnt work, yea. ur screwed. better just buy a new soundcard and attach it to the computer.
i tried helping you. i hope it helps you‼

That sucks. You might have to get a new c drive. My computer had like 40 something virus and my friend's dad got rid of them all. Right now I'm having trouble with youtube.com because no sounds are playing.

Thank you so much for your response, it really helped...for now my plan would be to do all that and check if its because of those causes but besides that ill try to make sure that it is the virus first thats causing all this. If it isnt then i will turn to those of the alter causes maybe if possible it is by the cause of lose connections inside the tower, cd drive and sound card connections. THANKS SO MUCH FOR THE ADIVCES!!!! I APPRECIATE IT.

Well your CD can't detect -- but in my situation, my computer can't detect my Video Card. Currently i'm using display adaptor. ~Not Good for gaming!!!!~

AUCH, that hurts. Anyway, if you want a clean install, you gotta watch out 'cos you cannot use the same windows cd key twice. So basically do NOT auto-update "genuine advantage". This update will check if you have a genuine version of windows. And if you don't, i will give a warning everytime you boot; "You might be the victim of piracy yidda yidda yidda", and will cause yer pc to boot slower every time you boot.

You can use the same CD key again. Up to three times. After that you have to call a Microsoft 1-800 number and explain why you keep reformatting, but you can keep using your legal copy.

You could try another antivirus. If you use Norton, this antivirus shouldn't conflict, go to www.avira.com and download Antivir personal edition classic. If you can, uninstall your current antivirus and if you have one, use a registry cleaner before the install and update it then go into the configurations for Antivir and then go into Expert mode and in Expert mode, look for the sections with Heuristic analysis and enable it and set it for high and also look for the section on risks to detect and click select all and then in the bottom of the box, click Ok and then run a full system scan but remember to update your virus definitions first. If that doesn't work, try avast! or AVG. For a registry cleaner before installing another antivirus, try Advanced WindowsCare v2 Personal. All of the programs that I mentioned are free so try them out. I have used all of the antivirus programs and several of my friends have used it and one told me that it completely destroyed all of his malware on his PC. To prevent this from happening, try to use Microsoft Update to get the security patches from MS, enable heuristic analysis on your antivirus and set it to high, remember to update your antivirus, and if your really eager to say goodbye to malware, I would suggest switching to Linux or once it is in at least the beta phase, ReactOS, ReactOS is an open source clone of Windows NT. If you are more interested in Linux, send me a message and I will let you know of some distributions that are user friendly and that you can get for nothing.

Please visit my message board, I only have 3 members now and I would appreciate it. It is at s10.invisionfree.com/the_world_2.

Actually to correct on what everyone has said about activation you can use your original CD key as many times as you want but if you activated your copy of windows xp less then 4 months before any reformat then you have to call up microsoft to activate your copy but if it's after this amount of time then your safe but they don't keep your activation data for the 4 months from when you activate it as they clear out all the data every 4 months so if you activate a few days before they clear everything out and you have to reformat a month later then you'll be safe with a online activation but then I don't even know when this happens (and if you do want to know I do keep an eve on the newsgroups on the microsoft website so I do know what I'm talking about)

No, that's wrong. I've reformatted with one XP product key only 4 times over a period of several years and after the third time, I had to call them. Really it's more complicated than just how many times you activate. There's a complicated algorithm that I do know how it works (basically) but that's beyond the scope of this problem. Just know that you're good to go with using your key again.

Getting to know your computer is the best defense you can EVER have. It doesnt take a rocket scientist to understand the computer, and it would certainly save you a lot of trouble. Now, im not saying your bad at the computer or that I am better than you.

Read up on the concepts that make the computer work, tinker with it. Enjoy the perks of proprietary software, if you break it the ones you paid for it will fix it. ;)

On a side note, I dont use any anti-virus software on my XP box. I just use Zone Alarm and find it offers me all the protection I need even without updates, against the newest of viruses.

Very interesting problem, but at this point I'm assuming that it is gone. But hypothetically, if this happened to me (in the next year, I'd say the percentage of it happening would be so low that I'd have a better chance of winning the lottery)...
--One test I would make is to double-check the CD-ROM drive functionality both with and without windows. How? Get a LiveCD with some random linux distro of your choice, and make sure that your BIOS is setup to boot from CD first and only check hd after.
--if above is successful, check to see if your audio works in linux
--in the future, for antiviruses, norton * sucks (* meaning basically everything by that company). A good free antivirus is AVG http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1 .

that's all for now

ok if your having that much trouble with your disk reader your probably better off getting a new one go to www.zipzoomfly.com thats where i buy all my parts when i build my computers. and second with the video card situation your video card might not be updated enough for your computer, also you could have blown something on the circut board, for now just try plugging it into another power source, also find out what video card it is and go onto that site they usially have a download so you can reinstall it onto your computer if you do not have a disk.

ever tried linux?, try linux distro ubuntu, it has friendly installer, or you can enter this os from it live cd, no virus, many hardware has been recognized, nice GUI, and good community support.

but yeah, like other linux, it lack of application, and you have to get used with it for couple days, linux is different than windows.

Having XP Home or Pro won't solve any problem on its own. But that's beside the point by now. The original author hasn't posted here for weeks. If they still have a problem or encounter a new one, they can just create a new thread.
