The answer to the question "What was there before the Big Bang?" has not been definitively answered, and it may not be possible to do so. Scientists speculate that at time = 0, the universe would be accurately described as a Gravitational Singularity. For time < 0, however, we honestly have no clue. Recently popular is Brane Cosmology, in which our universe is sitting on a 3-d membrane. Two such membranes collide, releasing the energy of the big bang. Of course, since we are stuck on this membrane, we can neither prove or disprove the existence of our or any other membrane. I am not a big fan of "santa clause" scientific theories like this, so I will say it is outright wrong. To me, it seems like "what happened before time began?" is as much a silly question as "what is there beyond the end of the universe?". The answer is, simply, "NOTHING" (or, even better, "you just asked a question that does not make sense in a scientific setting"). Deal with it!

Some say that the expansion of the universe will slow to a stop, reverse, and collapse back together. Perhaps this has already happened before, and after collapsing into a point for the nth time, n 1th big bang occured, and we are in the n 1th universe. Of course then you'll ask what there was before the first big bang, well then I'd have to say there never was one, and if you were to trace the energy back you'd find it was in a stable equilibrium that constantly formed matter that expanded, collapsed, turned back to energy, which started the big bang, and now I'm just rambling nonsense, but you get the general idea.
