The ending of Saikano
Link | by mute on 2006-06-29 15:04:34
Ok so i just watched the Saikano last night, dang it was sad. I have to say that the series was great, but i just don't get the ending. It appears to me that The Earth gets completely destroyed, except for Shuuji and um he continues to live on with Chise in his head? What i dun get is since the earth is gone how can he be like alive? Air, Water, Food. Doesn't he need these to survive?
Plz help me understand, i'm sitting here scratching away at my head at this.

I think it's left a bit unclear to let the viewer decide...

I have a few theories on this:

1. Shuuji is still alive, albeit possibly the only person on Earth. Chise continues on in his memories.

2. Shuuji is dead, but his memories of Chise are somehow immaterial but still present. Chise continues to live on happily, with Shuuji, in memory. Neither Shuuji or Chise is a spirit or otherwise ethereal being; just the memories exist.

3. Shuuji is dead, but he and Chise will be able to live on together as spirits/immaterial beings. The destroyed "Earth" is just remnants in memory before beginning a "new" afterlife.

4. Shuuji is alive, but will die, as he is the only person left alive with no means of survival. Chise will live on in his heart until he dies. There is no continuation after death, but Shuuji will live with Chise's memory until that point.

These all sound really ridiculous. I personally think 3 or 4 is the most probable. Anyway, I think it's best you imagine whatever end you wish. Some outcomes are happy while others quite sad.

hmm..after reading ur theories, i think i sort of understand d ending better. but the truth is, i don't really get saikano at all! i can sense the sadness somewhere but most of the time, i went 'what? what jz happened? what?'

most of the scenes that really saddens me involved people other than shuuji n chise. when take died, yukari died, akemi..etc3..

however, i think shuuji is the only one left on earth in the end. n he'll probably die soon afterwards as well coz he couldn't survived alone. so my theory follows no. 4 ^^

Haha, Saikano is awesome. Possibly one of the only animes I can remember where if you are not one of the main characters, you ARE going to die. And if you are one of the main characters and it's after episode 11, you ARE going to die. IMO, they are all dead - one way or another. Personally, I think the ending is that Shuuji is the last remaining human on the planet, which means he's dead anyways and humanity is extinct.

...and who yo daddy, huh? WHO YO DADDY?Where's your god now? Here she is! Death is certain, the hour is not ~Gankotsuoh

It's never stated who. However, there is evidence from the anime and the manga that America is against Japan. Chise has been destroying cities, so it's possible there is a coalition, including the US, bent on attacking Japan and destroying the "ultimate weapon" threat. It's also possible that the other countries are attacking Japan for land, which may be one of the few inhabitable places due to destruction or other means.
