What d'you think of Googles Eng-日本 translation?
Link | by rising_phoenix on 2006-05-31 02:25:31
Well, just wanted to know how good it is.
My own Japanese is not the best, but it seems to translate simple sentences quite good...

oh and one last question :
Why does it always use である instead of です?

My japanese name is 山下 Yamashita (under the mountain) 明 Akira (bright).

Meaning wise, it's not different. But usage isn't the same.

"dearu" makes a strong statement about a fact, with very little room to despute.

"desu" makes a statement, but it doesn't carry as much emphasis.

Use of "dearu" is not very polite, so you won't use it to anyone who is respected, such as teacher. In fact, you don't hear it much in conversations (even with your friends). Use of "desu" is much more typical and polite. You probably see "dearu" more in writing than speaking. There is a famous Japanese literature that starts with the famous quote:

"wagahai ha neko dearu." (I am a cat)

The author could've said "watashi ha neko desu," but then the sentence just doesn't carry as much emphasis, so he purposely wrote it as you see.

The google translations aren't good. It can get mixed up. When I was curious and put "mama" in, it came out as way.

You have to remember it's a beta version. It can't tell the difference between some of the words.

I think that this site proved to be better than that of Google Translator.

I do not recommend usage of any online automated translators. They make me sad. D;

goggle tl are good for a laugh, lol.
it kinda gets the context a lil right, but really really bad tl, very rigid to the rules it was programmed with, i guess its shows the best what literal translation from japanese to english is like:

It cannot be done! ^^
