it's possible, but it would be very complicated and you would have to watch a lot of different anime to do so. I would just stick to just learning it step by step, from other instructors.

i learned a great deal of my vocabulary and grammar from watching subbed anime. however, SPEAKING is another story! you need first hand conversational experience to become proficient at speaking.

| I also learned my first few words from watching subs. But yes, basically you need to actually speak to a Japanese person to get real experience/practice. I'm learning from audio tapes and books and websites and so on, but if you actually talk to a native speaker i think it will help a lot, but that sucks for me because i know no Japanese people. |

No. You can learn vocab and some little phrases, but you can't magically learn to speak it from subs. Take classes.. preferrably in Japan. :/ Full emersion is the only way to get a grip on it. Anything learned in another country is really just the tip of the iceberg, I found. |

my friend's able to speak & write basic japanese by only reading manga and watching anime. but she sounds very "manly" whenever she uses japanese. see the problem of not using proper learning materials?

Well, I don't think it's truly possible to become very fluent in all aspects of the language merely by watching anime and such, but it can definetly help you to get a feel for the language, which can help you to learn it. Helps me, anyway. |
