kawaii,
pitiful yet cute, adorable, clumsy, child-like (for underaged schoolgirl)
note: "kawai sou" means "how sad" or "how pitiful." though kawai is not etymologically related to kawaii.

suteki,
beautiful, wonderful, elegant (for adult women/both genders)
note: "suteki da ne?" = "isn't it beautiful?"

Use kawaii. Using suteki is just plain weird, where as kawaii is cuter and appeals to females of all ages.

@riceboks,
appeal to females of all ages? you don't say "kawaii na obasan", huh? that would be weirder...

Yeah, why not? :P It works in any other language, so why not Japanese? Besides, your grandmother may do something cute and you can say it's cute. :o Of course you can use other words, but it should be okay to say your grandma is cute at times. When you say something or someone is cute, you're not really acting serious. When you use 'suteki', there's an act of seriousness behind it, making it a stronger (bolder?) word.

hmm still u wouldnt preferrably use kawaii on older females.. actually there are some women that dont really like being called kawaii... so in those circumstances suteki is a more appropriate choice...

lol and as an adjective u wouldnt really call obasan kawaii lol doesnt sound right =p

but if u do.. well its up to u i guess *scratches head* xD

Try kirei

Well, it all depends, I guess. Actions, clothing, things like that, I would use kawaii for. For a face? Kawaii. For a grandma's face? Yasashii.

@Euphony
When you use kirei though, wouldn't it be for bigger things?

Actually, while I'm on that, wouldn't you use suteki and kirei for bigger things? When I say bigger things, I mean bigger than a face. :P

It seems like the difference between kawaii and suteki is the class or elegance of the person you are talking about. Someone who isn't clumbsy, who is graceful, and probably has a bit of maturity in them, would use suteki.

Kawaii is silly, clumsy, and childish, use that on people who are such :P

Kawaii!! ^_^ Suteki is a cool word, but it sounds like a weapon name or a sword name.

as Rice Boks said, it kinda does seem to go with the girls a lot better! ß)

Commonly kawaii is used for shoujo - shounen
Commonly suteki is used for view/panorama

Shoujo also suit with kirei.
Shounen also suit with kakkoii.
