how is Jack a nickname for John? They have the exact same number of letters and syllables. It makes no sense. |

Well tell me how to hell dick is related to Richard? Eh? Or Robert and Bob? Ass and my dad? Huh uh? Sorry, I have no clue. I let out a lil steam there with my last one. My dad keeps threatening to delete my book. Sure *shrug* it's only like 90 pages into it, but that is still a lot!! *whines* If I find out, then i'll fill ya in.

lol, yeah just a little steam there schala. And what book are you talking about? like just a regular reading book? but back to the topic, I kinda know like a pattern, but all I know/or can say, is that its just another nickname or something. Like Cristina to Nina(my friend)!! its really common where I live, and everywhere, like in sports(basketball, wrestling, football, etc...) they have nicknames too, some are just so outragous it doesn't make sense what-so-ever!! here's an example. plus he's a hall-of-famer basketball player so its ok!! Ex: Karl "The Mailman" Malone but ppl would jsut say the mailman, karl malone. its quite confusing but you tend to get used to it..I guess!? ![]() ------- |

nicknames... interesting topic. My answer for you would be a counterexample, one that was brought up already, Dick and Richard. . o O (Richard Cranium...) As for that pair, Rich is short for Richard, Rich sorta looks like Dich (if it's written sloppy), and 'ch' can sound like 'ck' ... :D It's a stretch, but that may well be how that came along. Anyway, nicknames don't really mean much, they probably have obscure meanings down the line. |

I asked the same question once and got a funny list of names and their weird unmatching nikcnames. I forgot them all. |

Nickname doesn't neccessary need a direct relationship with the real name. I mean, u can call someone by a nickname that doesn't have any connection, what so ever with the real name. Nicknames is just a name that people use to call u. It doens't even have to be ur real name, or has a connection to ur real name. Sometimes, people also call other people by "nick names" just to joke around, or simply make fun of that people. |
