Better Composer, Yuki Kajiura or Yoko Kanno?
Link | by KLiC_015 on 2006-04-30 03:19:39
These are currently the two most famous music composers in Japan. Yuki Kajiura has done the OST of Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles, .hack//sign, Aria, etc. Yoko Kanno has done the OST of Escaflowne, Cowboy Bebop, Wolf's Rain, and much more. Both are on the rise, but who do you think is better?

Yoko Kanno's style is very orchestra-like and more classical. He (I'm not really sure if Yoko is a man so...ignore it) can make sounds that can be varied as either classical or modern. Combining modern and classical music he can create soothing sounds at the same time have a very upbeat sound to it. He made is debut on the soundtrack of Escaflowne and has proven to be a great composer. He teams up with Maaya Sakamoto, who also made her debut on the series of Escaflowne, and matches nice music with her voice like the songs "Yakusoku nado Iranai","Gravity", "Hikari no Naka e", "Kaze ni Fuku hi", "Tell me what the Rain knows", and many other singles. Finally, I can say he has a very deep and sort of ferocious kind of music.

Meanwhile Yuki Kajiura's style is very soothing and soft. Her style is gentler and feminine than that of Yoko Kanno. Her best compositions come out in .hack//sign and Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles wherein the soundtrack brings out a very pleasing effect to each scene. Her original style composes of techno and romantic sounds which sort of opposes to Yoko's style. In my opinion a very original sound and may be very pleasing to the ears. She made a team up with Maaya Sakamoto, who stars as Princess Tomoyo, on the single "Loop" and "High Touch" for the OST of Tsubasa Chronicles. Throughout this series she made songs which mostly included Yui Makino, who stars as Princess Sakura. These songs include "Amrita", "Jasmine", "You are my Love", and "Yume no Tsubasa".

You're opinion now. Who do you think is better?

My opinion? Yuki Kajiura.

Miyuki, plz use the 'modify' button to edit your post-!!

For me, I like Yuki Kajiura more than Yoko Kanno.

FYI, Yoko Kanno is not a man. 'His' a she. A woman. Searched at animenewsnetwork.

Miss Yuki Kajiura is my music goddess. :P

Her songs are crafted so beautifully. To me, her greatest works were for Tsubasa Chronicle and Petit Cossette. We all know she is the keyboarder for See-Saw and she does a wonderful job playing away at them keys but the violin music she makes are absolutely amazing.

Oh, I could gush and fangirl over Kajiura all day if I could :D

Yoko Kanno's debut anime soundtrack was Macross Plus (as sole composer, no collaboration and not credited as "additional music by"), that was 1994. So, you can say that Shoji Kawamori (Macross creator) made her career. That's why she does Kawamori animes, Arjuna, Escaflowne, Cowboy Bebop, Aquarion.

Her actual debut soundtrack was for a video game (Romance of the Three Kingdoms, I think).

Her orchestration style resembles classic Hollywood scores similar to Henry Mancini, John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, while her songs follow any popular style out there, Enigma, Clannad, Enya, U2, Life in Mono, Sting. Mostly anything to do with percussions. Also, she makes up her lyrics, as in they're "not in any earth language". Her quote.

On Yuki Kajiura, I've only heard .Hack//SIGN and Avenger. A bit too much on the New Age part but at least the lyrics aren't made up.

All in all, I prefer Yoko Kanno. Kajiura sounds a bit limited to me, not enough range.

I like both of them, but if I had to choose, I have to say Yuki Kajiura.
PS: I like the 'made up' lyrics of Yoko Kanno btw (sounds great in Escaflowne). Yuki Kajiura is not really 'that good' when trying to incorporate english in her song (i prefer she did full japanese lyrics).

YOKO KANNOOOOOOO
i think her forte is jazz (Pearls and Goodnight Julia from Bebop). then again, she uses small ensemble effectively with gorgeous flutes or oboes/english horn. es: My Little Flower from Wolf's Rain. Also, she can really make my spirits lift with surround sound from the joyous anouncing in We're Flying-escaflowne and Rain of Blossoms (oh that happy harp!)-wolf's rain I'm a sucker for orchestral music T_T

i don't really have much to say for yuki.... =/

Just kidding. I haven't realley heard much of Ms. Kajiura's music, so my vote goes Yoko Kanno. I simply adore her stuff.

ara ara... this is tough coz i kinda like them equally... not coz of the animes their work features in... but for their sounds... my vote would probably lead more towards Yuki coz i loved some pieces from .Hack//sign!!!

Yuki Kajiura does have the edge here, although we surely do underappreciate the stylings of Yoko Kanno. Yoko is one hell of a composer, as is Kajiura, but it's a slight edge for Yuki in this one.

Oh, and Kitty, you said before Yuki Kajiura is "not that good" incorporating English lyrics into her music. Check out the song "IN the Land of Twilight, Under the Moon" on here by Yuki Kajiura. She incorporates full English into it, and it's stellar.

Don't make fun of it, don't destroy it, don't cheapen it. The one small thing that everyone has. My love, my dreams, and you. I won't let those go, no matter what.

To i_to

Yuki Kajiura did not have anything to do with Avenger. Ali-Project was the composer for that series.

In my opinion, Kajiura does a good job writing English songs. She also speaks it pretty well :P Better than I can which is a shame since I grew up in America >_<

Oops, my mistake. I watched them both at the same time and thought since they sounded similar it was Kajiura.

I just watched Tsubasa Chronicles and Kajiura does the same New Age/World Music style. I'm not saying it's bad. In fact, I thought her music sounded good. But it doesn't seem like she can break into other genre of music and will end up stuck doing the same thing.

It's true that Kajiura-san doesn't have as wide a range, and I love a lot of Kanno Youko-san's stuff, but I've been loyal to Kajiura-san for too long to change. ^-^ My favorite OST by her was the "Boogiepop and Others" OST, which was not an anime, but is anime-related (I can't get into why, that'd take up too much space.) When I found out that she had composed other music, I immediately listen to as much of it as I could get my hands on...and loved it all. I also go the "Le Portrait de Petite Cossette" OST, which is also awesome.

I love a lot of Kanno Youko's stuff, though. I think she calaborates with other artists often, which is what gives her music such a broad range.

So, Kajiura Yuki gets my vote.

Ah..... I don't think I can choose one this time. They're both great composers, and I have favorite songs from both of them. The stuff Yoko Kanno did for Ghost in the Shell ("Inner Universe", "Rise") is awesome, and I love a few of the songs of Kajiura's stuff as well.

Whoa, it's the composer of NOIR vs Escaflowne, huh? For me it's a tie. Can't choose. But I think the best aren't of those two. I like I'VE SOUND better. I'm sure you all know I'VE Sound, right? Shakugan No Shana, Kannazuki No Miko, Onegai teacher, Onegai Twins, etc.

But don't get me wrong. I love both Yoko Kanno and Yuki Kajiura. Especially "Canta Per Me","Mezame","Kimi wa Boku ni Niteiru"," for Yuki Kajiura and most Escaflowne songs from Yoko Kanno.

And does anyone know the composer for Ghibli Studio? I forgot his name. He's quite good too, you know.
