Gas Prices in Japan

Since people are complaining how high gas prices are lately, I was wondering what the price is in Japan. I know in Europe it is $5 or $6. Is Japan that expensive?

I'd like to know in gallons, because I'm American and it's hard to keep conversions straight in my head. Stupid Americans and their crazy measurements, why can't we be like the rest of the world!

All I know is that it's the most expensive in the world. But its more common to take mass transit than drive, I think.

I found this site here and it said:

Japanese motorists pay about 110 yen per liter (about $3.79 per gallon) or historically about twice what motorists in America pay. While pump prices in Japan have been relatively constant for several years, starting in April Japanese motorists began to feel the pinch of higher prices. On June 1, Japanese gasoline distributors announced a significant 4-yen per liter (14 cents per gallon) increase in the gas price. More increases may yet be ahead. In March, the pump price was 100 yen per gallon.

100 yen per gallon!? That's cheap!!! o_o

Japanese motorists pay tons of money. They have to have their cars shaken every few years to make sure they are safe still, and licences alone cost about $3000 to get. Parking is usually pay in big cities, in Tokyo to park a car monthly in a lot near your house was about $120.

Also you have to pay when you travel on the highways. How it works is that you get a ticket before you get on the highway, and when you get off at your destination, you pay the fee the distance you traveled. I never drove in Japan (Americans have to take drivers tests and pay to get a license, I think other countries don't have to though), but when I rode, I frequently went between Shizuoka and Tokyo.. about a 2 hour drive, and it would cost about $70 on the freeway.

Shinkansen (bullet train) was cheaper, about $40 I think.

Even cheaper was the freeway bus, which was $30.

Even though Japanese have great public transportation, and tons of people use it, there are still tons of cars everywhere.
