Time for some random translation help!
Link | by on 2006-04-19 18:00:00
I'm feeling real lazy today, so I'm asking all you good people out there if you could help me translate these *very* simple (and short) phrases into Japanese.

Try to make them look/sound obscure too! :o

The phrases are:
  1. Message me
  2. Add me
  3. IM (instant message) me
  4. Add to group
  5. Forward to friend
  6. Add to favorites
  7. Block user
  8. Rank user

Okay, maybe they're too short to be called phrases, but I need a lil help on this. And if you haven't guessed where this came from, MySpace is one clue. :P

Difficult Kanji is a plus! :o

Make the simple obscure, huh? Okay. I'm not the greatest kanji slinger around, but here's my entry for IM.

IM me = 忌芽背字 ("imeseji"; "detestable characters that seem to spring high".

I think it describes perfectly the feeling I get when I get bombarded with messages over AIM.

ここに何を言うのか全く分からない。。。

Woa...these look like straight out of babelfish.

When using things for the purpose you are using them for, you usually do not use the gerund/command forms like the pervious post said. And those were bad translations anyway... probably out of babelfish like the person said.

A lot of these are using words specific to the website you're using, for example:

Message me
メッセージする

IM me
IMする

Block user
ユーザーをブロックする

Rank user
ユーザーをランキングする

A lot of websites and things like this will use the english words simply written with Japanese characters and such. I know that livejournal's user interface phrases like this are basically all katakana with する and things after them. It would probably look better if you just left them in English. Using "difficult kanzi" would make them look really wrong and out of place. Using what the previous user posted would look REALLY strange. If you just like the look of kanzi, maybe try asking someone to use the Chinese translations, as they would all be made with Chinese characters :)

Also, words like ユーザー which is just the english word "user" has a completely different meaning than finding a word that translates literally as user, and wouldn't make any sense to be used in this case.
