Normal users won't see the link because there's nothing between the <a> and </a>, so there's nothing to click on. However, some undesirable (read: spam) bots ignore robots.txt and follow the link. When they hit the trap three times (allowing for mistakes of curiosity), their IP address is temporarily blocked. |
